and it turned kind of brown in the fridge - how does Gerber keep it fromt turning brown I wonder? It smelled fine and my LO loved it but I was kind of surprised.
Gerber puts some kind of preservative in it, I think asorbic acid. Banana puree will turn brown in the freezer but it tastes fine.
If you don't want it to turn brown, you can just leave the bananas in their skins, and slice them into the portion size you want (I usually cut one banana into 4 chunks), and then freeze the chunks. Take them out, defrost in the microwave, and then squeeze the banana part out of the skin into your bowl. Viola! Banana puree.
What pps said. It's fine that it's brown. I take ~1/3 of the banan, slice it in a bowl, microwave, and mash. The rest of the banana stays in the peel, into a plastic bag, and refrigerated. I didn't have any luck with freezing so I just buy 2 at a time.
Re: I made homemade banana puree........
preservatives
I just mash up 1/2 a banana and give it to DS right then.
