Trying to Get Pregnant

Ahead of myself but... special birthing plans?

So according to my parents who were hippies through and through, their birth plan when they had me was called the "birth without violence."  Yes, yes.  The Dr. was not allowed to swat me to get me to cry, the lights were dimmed and soft music played.  Everyone had to speak in low whispers, even my mother in the midst of labor.

So, what about you ladies?  Anyone have their sights set on a birth without pain meds?  Water births?  Home births?  Bouncing on a trampoline?  Wink

Do share!

Me - I think I'll do the standard in-hospital with epidural.

  • Funny you bring this up today.  I was just thinking about that myself.  I humored the idea of a water birth, but I think that would freak out DH.  I definitely want to do it at a hospital, no home birth or anything like that.  I'm undecided on the epi....but knowing me, it will probably be a must since I'm a wussy when it comes to any pain!

  • Isn't that the Scientology method of childbirth? Silent birth, I think it's called.

Anyway, I plan to go drug free, and while I would LOVE to give birth at home, I think I would just be too scared something would go wrong, and we would have to race the clock to get to a hospital. Plus, insurance doesn't cover that plan. I may look into a midwife, and possibly a birthing center, that is VERY close to a hospital.

  • I'm very interested in a water birth. I was/am a total water baby and it just seems a little more relaxing to give birth in warm water. But who knows what I'll actually do if I ever get pregnant.

  • I'm not planning on the home birth. I'm more of a birthing center / hospital type gal.

I do plan on attempting a drug free birth. I just want to see if I can actually do it.

  • An in-hospital water birth sounds great to me, but I am a wimp when it comes to pain so I'll probably opt for the epi. I've heard you can't do both water birth and epi, so..... drugs will trump!
  • Yep, I'm pretty sure an epidural is the way to go for me.I haven't given it too much thought beyond the fact that I'm pretty scared of the pain.

I'm an idealist. My mom went totally natural (no meds at all) and I plan to also. No bathtubs with placentas floating in them, no hanging from bars. Just pushing a baby out in a regular hospital.

I get the thing about being scared if not in a hospital.  I have heard that some birthing centers are actually connected to hospitals these days.

In the hospital with an epidural :) I have a very low tolerance for pain
  • I like the idea of a home birth, but the paranoid side of me might not let me go through with it.

I've thought about water birth/birthing center, but I haven't researched my options yet. Hoping for drug free, hypnobirth. Maybe a doula.?

I am not sure.  I just googled it and it looks like some guy wrote a book with the same name in the 90's.  I was born in 77.  Not sure about that one.

  • Your arrival actually sounds romantic...dimmed lights and music and all.Wink. I haven't thought much about it to be honest.

    Now on the unplanned side...

DH was born in an ambulance on the autoban in Germany  - as it tore towards the hospital. I guess you can't pull over on certain sections so a mobile birth it was.

Of course you can Christy! Women have been doing for.....um..ever? Lol. You're a tough chick, I bet you'll do fine when the day comes.
  • I would love to do a home birth! But if that is not possible for some reason then I would like to do a water birth. I also want no drugs.

My best friend had her baby in Nov. She did it all natural. She said the contractions were way more worse then giving birth. But each woman is different.

  • I'll definitely plan on giving birth at a hospital .. & drug me up baby!! My mom went drug free but when the doc went to numb her down there to stitch her up, he didn't wait long enough and she felt every.single.stitch. She said it hurt worse than childbirth, so that freaked me out.

  • I want to be in a hospital so someone has to clean up after me.   No, I'm kidding either.  This is 100% why I have NEVER considered having my future child at home.

  • Count me as another home birth hopeful ... although I worry a bit about freaking out our neighbors in the building (old building, thin walls lol).  I also plan on having a drug-free birth, but you know what that say about the best laid plans of mice and men...

Good thing we live a 5 minute drive from a hospital!

Scratch that.  It was originally written in the 70's and my mother just said "I loved the idea of a soothing birth and your father and I were so anti-war we thought it would make you be a peaceful person.

I don't know...prob the basic hopsital one with as many pain meds as possible.  I would love to think I could do it without but who am I kidding.

Although the trampoline one sounds fun but dangerous...lol.

  • I would like a water birth, but I don't have a strong preference one way or another.  I would also like to go without an epi only because I've had back surgery and have heard that it is more difficult to place and can cause complications (ie, it not working effectively or something).  But I also am not going to beat myself up if I get one.  Who knows...

I definitely would have loved to have my Mom with me.  She is prob the person I would want the most.  You are very lucky to get that chance :)

  • I'm thinking a hospital suite with a view and an epi. I give mad props to those who go natural. For me, a quick sharp needle stick is more appealing than hours and hours of pain. I arrive at this conclusion every time I get my period and moan in pain from the cramps - I figure if my cramps hurt me like that, WTF will labor feel like?

  • I'd prefer to give birth at our new birthing center, but my insurance doesn't cover it, so we'll do a hospital birth with my OB/GYN, but we'll have a doula.  We live 5 minutes from the hospital, so I plan to labor at home as long as possible before having to check-in.  I prefer to no invasive measures unless it's a dire emergency.  I want to go au naturel.

I also want to BF right away (before the baby is whisked away) and opt out of the Hep vaccines until later.  We also will pay for the private birthing suite so we can all be in the same room together, including DH and the baby will get to stay in there too.

  • I don't really have much choice - just epi or no epi (going no epi - needles in my spine are not okay).  The nearest birthing center is an hour away and the county hospital doesn't have any fancy water birthing rooms.  At least the new hospital will be open by then which will have almost all private rooms.
  • Home birth (shocker I know), birthing tub, and lots of quiet. Just me and DH.
  • To me the joy of a hospital birth is that for a couple of days someone else feeds you and cleans up after you. No houseowkr, just getting your head around dealing with baby.

My local hospital does water births which I'm quite interested in. My friend did a water birth and she said it was like magic getting in the water.

Ideally I'd like to go drug free but I'm not militant about it.?
