So, I have to admit I felt bad...but wasn't really nervous about it...until this morning when I learned it is here in Minnesota now. So, I am kinda getting worried now.....anyone else with me on this one? Or do you think I am just being a nervous nelly?
Re: Swine Flu- are you nervous?
I completely understand why people are nervous, but it's important to maintain some perspective on flu viruses. Seasonal flu, the kind that we come to expect every year, kills over 35,000 people a year. 35,000!
So far, swine flu in the US is relatively mild and its spreading can be controlled with handwashing and other common sense hygiene practices. If someone gets swine flu and gets early medical attention, so far, they end up okay. I'm certainly no doctor, but think that things like MRSA are far more scary than swine flu.
I wasn't nervous until today, when I read that a 23 month old died in Texas from the swine flu.
We're in a border state, so it's only a matter of time before it crosses over here. And my kids have lungs damaged by prematurity. So yeah, it's kinda scary for me. Though I do agree with the pp that things like MRSA are more scary.
I'm more nervous about overreactions. A co-worker's day care sent out a note this morning with a new sick policy. If a child shows any symptoms of illness (not verified swine flu, but any type of flu-like symptoms including cold, cough, etc.) the child will be required to leave day care for 7 days.
I've missed a week and a half of work this year with illnesses, and it's just the end of April. Granted I save up as much vacation time as possible in case the girls are sick, but having to miss work because they just have a cold for weeks at a time is not a viable option.
My company will be having layoffs in the near future, and it's not going to look good to not be able to work every time they have a runny nose.
?? ?I am nervous because I am being induced in 3 weeks and who wants to be at a hospital if there is an outbreak of some sort. My DH works at a large corporate office here in Arizona and people are always sick there! He has gotten me sick twice during this pregnancy. I am afraid he will bring it home with 2 little babies and me. I just think they need to step up and do something more drastic to stop it before it starts. I mean look at what Asia is doing with the heat cameras. I almost think they should close the borders for leisure travel and only allow business travel through there. Most of these cases were from people visiting Mexico, but now they are spreading it to other people!?
Can you hear my hormones talking? Lol.?

It doesn't make me feel good- but i'm not freaking out over it either.
If you look at the ratio of deaths compared to any other flu or virus out there- it's VERY small - I think the media is causing way too much hysteria.
Yes- we will up our hand washing... yes, we'll call the doc at the first sign of the flu... but other than that- i'm not changing anything or letting myself get too upset about it.
Your chances of dying eating salmonella infected nuts or lettuce with ecoli is probably a lot greater- but that news story has fizzled out.... The media creates a LOT of the craziness around this stuff.
As long as Tamiflu and Relenza is still available and being produced- I see no huge worry.
yes - having newborns during an outbreak is a little scarier- but I trust my hospital nursery/NICU/maternity ward to take every precaution.
MRSA doesn't scare me in the least....mostly because its very probable that I have it (being a RN) most health care workers have it and don't know it
Yeah. I dont want anything to happen to my babies!:(
I'm mildly worried because my two were micro preemies and still pretty young so we're taking precautions but we've been doing that all winter already.
I do think there is a lot of media hype surrounding all this.
I'll probably worry more if & when it comes to Wisconsin.
WELL STATED!
I am keeping a good perspective on it...it just stinks that DH is in and out of doctors offices all day so he is being extra careful with the hand washing and getting out of his work clothes when he gets home...
