And he took it very well! I wanted to share because I was nervous (our organization has under 50 employees so we would not be held to any FMLA standards.) So, after a meeting with him to review the latest marketing projects, I slid an envelope across the table with this letter inside and said, "I have some news." He looked nervous-- like he thought I was going to resign, so I blurted out "I'm Pregnant!" and then have him the highlights of this letter. Once he confirmed that I wasn't quitting, he was all congrats and even seemed fine with my request for flex-time. I've only been here for four months, so I'm very, VERY happy that this worked out. Good luck to those who are planning on broaching this subject in the coming weeks, I hope it goes as well for you as it did for me!
---------------------------------------------------
Dear [Boss],
After many months of infertility counseling and treatment, I?m pregnant. I?m in my last week of my first trimester and I wanted to give you ample notice that I will require a leave of absence in the fall. I want you to understand that my job is very important to me and that I intend to return to work in a timely manner. While I am out of the office, I will stay abreast of our activities through regular teleconferences with [our marketing coordinator], calling in for our weekly sales and monthly company meetings, staying on top of the communications committee and checking email. I will not be able to attend the Conference in San Francisco, as I will be in my 36th week, saving the company approximately $2,400.
Like any project, I have worked out the following timeline:
(SIDE NOTE: in the letter I have an ultrasound pic pasted to the right of this list)
Finally, I?m proposing that I transition back to work with a part-time schedule
Tuesday through Thursday 8AM to 3PM. If these are acceptable terms, we
can re-evaluate on a monthly basis to ensure it?s a good fit and make
schedule changes as needed.
You can expect me to work for this flexibility to ensure our sales team is properly supported in my absence and upon my return.
Sincerely,
S
Re: I told my boss I'm pregnant...
sorry, didnt read the entire thing, just the due date -we're due on the same day!
congrats!
Good job
Best of luck with the PT thing...I suggested dropping down to 4 days and my CEO nixed it.
Big E (6) & Little E (2.5)
Love the letter!
I was nervous to tell my boss as well, but not because our company is small. I didn't get a previous job because I was pregnant (working there through a temp agency). But my boss was actually really excited, so when she seen the look on my face she asked "This is a good thing right" and gave me a hug. I was so shocked.
I'm glad things have worked out for you. Initially, my boss told me I can work from home 2 days a week and now it is only 1 day when I come back from leave.
BTW: I noticed you live in Ardmore. I am right in Broomall. Are you delivering at Bryn Mawr?
