feeding your babies babyfood/cereal so soon. What is your hurry?
Babies do not need to start on solids till much later than most of you are starting. Trying to start too soon can lead to food allergies not to mention what a mess it can be. And did i mention the extra expense?
Babies do not get any of its nutrients from "solids" in the first year. They eat it to practice eating other foods when they get older.

Re: I do not understand why some of you start...
I started feeding my baby baby food at three months (rice about 2 wks earlier) for two reasons:
She was constantly hungry.. I feed her 6 oz, and 2 hours later she is screaming for another bottle again.
She has acid reflux. Babies with acid reflux tend to take solids earlier b/c it helps absorb some of the acid (according to pedi)
Ever since I've started, her reflux is much much better, and she will go about 3 hours (sometiems 4) before crying for another bottle
I have to agree with you, I don't understand the rush although speaking from experience - the pedi I saw for Jack's 4 month appointment (the condescending, patronizing, annoying pedi I can't stand) was pushing solids at 4 months, I think a lot of pedi's do. So there's that.
My other issue is people who use the "DC was STARING at me as I ate" and take that to mean he/she clearly wants to eat food.
My baby stares at me all the time. He stares at my dogs too - I don't think this means he wants to walk them (although he does want to grab them.)
"When it comes to sleeping, whatever your baby does is normal. If one thing has damaged parents enjoyment of their babies, it's rigid expectations about how and when the baby should sleep." ~ James McKenna, Ph.D., Mother Baby Behavioral Sleep Center, University of Notre Dame
I wasnt refering to acid reflux, of course thats a good reason to. I am refering to the majority of people who start their babies on "solids" just because. Sorry I didnt clarify it.
my post wasnt snarky at all, cleary you have never seen me be snarky. Why get so defensive about it?
And why do I care? (as a pp stated?) because I have seen a bunch of people on here forcing solids on their 2-3 month olds when they dont need it. My post was simply an informative one that lists WHY solids are introduced. For those that give it for acid reflux, that isnt the same as giving your kid carrots at 3 months just because.
TIA!
Thank you oh wise one for sharing your knowledge with us. Give me a freaking break. Your post was snarky and judgemental.
Okay, I originally thought the OP was directed at me, but this makes me second-guess that since DD is 4 months old. If it was, the pedi said I could start whenever I wanted at her 4 month appointment on Friday. I just gave her some banana and she did really well with swallowing and seemed to enjoy it. She's shown a lot of the typical signs that she is ready, and if she is and it makes her happy, why wouldn't I?

tell me, andrewsgal...where was the snark? point it out...im waiting!
judgemental? Nope. Just dont understand why some people think that a 2-3 month old needs carrots. Acid reflux excluded, babies do not need baby food that young. babies that are 5 months old are not what i am refering to...
SO sorry I didnt clarify that...FFS.
Geek! totally wasnt directed at you, or at anyone! I was just wondering why some people are in a hurry. Good lord, didnt expect there to be a huge back lash...its not like im asking about bf vs ff!! LOL
thanks, i really wasnt trying to be snarky or a biitch for that matter.
I think it's often just being impatient. With my daughter I gave her cereal at 2 months because I was so excited to do it... had never fed food to a baby before.
This time I could care less about making his diet more exciting so soon and sort of dread the messiness of him learning to eat.
Then you get people worried that they aren't giving baby enough... I have heard people actually say they could tell their baby needed more nutrients so they started rice. That makes ne sense. It's right there with the woman who told me her (not even one month yet) son was eating every three hours so she knew she wasn't producing enough milk. I don't care how you feed your baby, but at least be informed and say it's a choice instead of acting like you can't help it.
LOL! Let's not open up THAT can of worms!

no worries...i see i should have been more specific. are you seriously just now having a pp period? MEGAJEALOUS! I ebf and have the mirena...havent stopped spotting/bleeding yet! gah!
I'm intrigued about the whole "food allergy" concern for delaying solids...introduction of solids (such as cereal) used to start earlier than 5 months and it seems as though food allergies are more common now, with later introduction of solids.
