I really hope this virus disappears just as quickly as it appeared... Mayor Bloomberg on TV alternating between speech in English and awkward Spanish. I'm an ER nurse, and now I dread going to work. If somebody does, in fact, have it, I don't want it! On the other hand, I also worry that we'll be bombarded with hysterical people who think they have it. Many people misuse emergency services more than you may realize as it is already. Anyone hear anything yet about a vaccine? I know it responds to Tamiflu, but typically you have to begin treatment within 3 days of the onset of symptoms (for the common influenzas).
Re: NBC Special Report on swine flu in NY
I just watched this news report. I really hope they can contain it as best they can. It's so scary! My mom called me last night because she saw the news and I live just outside nyc. The kids at St. Francis Prep got it because they went to Mexico on Spring Break.
I work at a university and college kids go all sorts of places for spring break. I'm sure some of our students were in mexico 2 weeks ago during spring break.
umm, its the flu. Just a different strain.
I never understand flu hysteria.

This. I'm trying to stay calm since I'm going to Cozumel on Saturday. LoL. But, I figure I will take the same precautions as I do the common flu.?

I think it is a little different becuase of the bird and pig DNA origins, but yes, it is the flu and does respond to common treatments.
The hysteria is frustrating. You wouldn't believe what people come to the ER for these days, so I'm dreading the nonsense being magnified with this.
Poor you for having to deal with the ER. I am sure all of the hypochondriacs will be infiltrating!
I too don't think it's such a huge deal. It's a flu strain. Granted, none of us will have any antibodies. But as long as you don't have a compromised immune system you should be able to handle it, no?
I did hear though that you can be contagious 24 hours before you have symptoms. Essentially this means that someone who doesn't know they are sick yet can be infecting those around them. That grosses me out.
Whatever you make, it's not enough for being an ER nurse and dealing with what you deal with on a day-to-day basis...God Bless ya.....
People misuse ER because they have no where else to go, as you know not everyone has insurance. If there were more low cost clinics then people could go there.
There are clinics nearby, and many of the people guilty of this do have insurance! People have become so impatient and entitled that they won't even bother calling their own doctor, or they won't deal with the slightest discomfort. Don't even get me started on the drug-seeking population! I recently had a 25yr old woman who was definitely not pregnant come in because she'd been nauseous for 1hr. No pain, no vomiting, just didn't like being nauseous. We have people come in for a stuffy nose! People have definitely lost touch with the definition of EMERGENCY, and the nurse:patient ratios are disrupted and take time away from the patients who really need me because of this.
Would you go to the ER for a stuffy nose? No difficulty breathing, just because it's annoying you?
Thank you, sweetpea, that's nice of you to say.
AMEN. Huge thank you
