I feel jealous. I was looking through some old pictures on Snapfish - through my girlfirend's album and this was years ago when DH and I just got married. Well anyhoo- our friends just had a baby aback then nd I didnt think anything of it at that time, but it seems like her daughter "developed" more quickly then DD. She was sitting on her own by 4-5 months!!! And looking ready to crawl. By 3.5 months she was standing (assisted, but looking like she wanted to stand) DD is not sitting on her own. She can sit assisted and sometimes I can put a boppy around her and she can sit there for a minute before toppling over. We do tons of tummy time too. I dunno. I am feeling like maybe we havent done something right or enough? Do you we not have a lot of toys that encourage this? Am I crazy? I guess I am just jealous. Vent over.
Re: How common is it for babies to be sitting up on their own by 4-5 months?
DS was sitting up on his own by 5 months.. but he didn't roll over till 7 months...
all babies pick there thing....
Did you know that when your child reaches his/her milestones is mostly a hereditary thing? They're genetically programmed to roll over at a certain age, sit up at a certain age, get teeth at a certain age, etc. It's based on when you and your child's father did those same things. There are certain things you can do to encourage it (it's great that you do a lot of tummy time for example), but they're still only going to do it when they're ready.
I stopped worrying so much when I found that out.

Don't be jealous...it will happen soon enough. My baby was 6.5 months before she could sit up with a Boppy behind her (just to catch her if/when she fell backward), and only now do I feel comfortable without the Boppy.
Babies are all built very differently (as all people are). At this young age, there are some babies just built to do things easily. Then, add in their personality...if they really WANT to do something, they might work a little harder at it. My baby started sitting up well as soon as she was moved over to the next age infant room at daycare. All the other babies were sitting, and they propped her up, and it encouraged my lazy baby.
