3rd Trimester

SO confused on internals

Okay...A lot people say its painful or it hurt to get an internal...

Dont they just use their fingers? I just want to make sure!

Because thats what my doctor does.  It doesn't hurt its uncomfortable yes because I'm just so tight....but i dont cramp and its not painful to me...Is this not an internal though??? I am not dialated at all soooo...wouldnt that mean he did an internal! lol i know this sounds so stupid! Please dont flame me!

Re: SO confused on internals

  • I've had them since early 2nd trimester to check my cervix because of a history of PTL. They're uncomfortable but not painful. I think they only become painful once you start dialating because at that point the doctor is also putting their hand into the opening in your cervix. Unless what my doctor calls an internal is different from the norm.

  • I haven't had on yet...but I think it depends on the person.

Edit: Oh wait...yes I did when I went to Triage! LOL

I didn't think it was bad at all, so much so that I forgot about it.

Then again, I had stomach cramps and was puking my brains out at the time.

  • Yep, just the fingers.  I don't cramp afterwards, but it is painful.  I've got a lot of swelling in that area though so I guess that's why.  Maybe you're just lucky!  I wish I was Smile

No, that's an internal.  I agree...I don't think it hurts at all.  They just feel if your cervix is soft / effaced / dialating.

  • It only hurt for me because my cervix is high.  It wasn't super painful...just a lot of pressure and really uncomfortable.  It depends on the person though.  I am a wuss...

  • i had one at 28w because of BH...they just wanted to make sure it really was BH...that one was uncomfortable but not painful....

i had my first "real" one at 37 weeks last friday.  By real, I mean that she was measuring me and checking effacement...its was very uncomfortable bordering on painful, but I have always had problems with that type of exam...

i had light cramping and spotting afterward, which I expected...largely becuase she apologized for having to "root around" in there a lot...apparently babies head is very low and she had trouble measuring my cervix because of this...she had offered to stop if I was really uncomfortable or if it hurt, but i figured she was already in there, might as well continue

  • I've had 2 internals in the last 3 weeks due to concerns about preterm labor.  I'm not sure why, but they hurt like hell!  :(

Nah, just depends on the woman.  Some women think paps are hugely painful, others would describe them as uncomfortable.  So if internals are just uncomfortable for you, bonus.  I was the same way, FWIW -- they really weren't that fun but didn't do much.
