Trying to Get Pregnant

South Beach Diet

..I just started it yesterday and I'm wondering if anyone has any (tasty) recipes for phase 1?

Also, are there any success stories from people who have tried it? These next two weeks are going to be rough.. no alcohol, no fruit, carbs, sugar.. my salad with chicken and organic dressing for lunch is sounding so blah. hehe.

Re: South Beach Diet

  • Yep, I did it a few years ago and really liked it.  The first few days were the toughest in phase 1, then I found it got easier.

Now I'm on the low GI diet (more of a lifestyle change, rather than to lose weight), since January and it's been easier to stick to than South Beach.  Still many of the same principles, though.  Good luck!

There is a whole cookbook of recipes. I did it in college and it definitely works, its just really hard to stick to (I think). The cool thing is though, after doing phase one for a week or so, I actually stopped craving carbs (which they say will happen but I didn't believe it). But then you eat one and it completely screws up all your work!
  • thanks ladies! I'm thinking about buying the book..

and that's my concern is that once you eat a carb, you just gain the weight back. I think if I can make it to phase 2 and stick with eating just whole grains, it just might work. I'm trying whatever I can because my doc who knows I've been TTC suggested losing some weight. Too bad it's not as easy as it is to gain it! :)

  • I lost 13lbs when I did phase 1, then I didn't loose weight for almost 3 weeks in phase 2 then i gained or lost a pound here or there. then I started eatting more carbs/sugar and I have gained back 6 of the 13lbs. I'm planning on going back on phase 1 to kick start it again.

As far as recipes go, I would have fat free yogurt and use sugar free pudding powder (like a spoonful) and it was a great treat!  I had spaggitti squash for the first time and it was really good made it with spag sauce with turkey meat (can't have meatballs, no bread crumbs!). I also made this La Strata something and it was spinach, ricotta and something else with meat and sauce, its in the SB diet recipe book. We ate really plain for those 2 weeks. Eggs for breakfast, spinach salad with chicken for lunch and more salad and a lean meat for dinner.

  • I don't have any success stories, but I can tell you I developed kidney stones after a couple of months on the diet. I think the first and second phases are really too restrictive.
  • I ate alot of chicken salad and tuna on salad. Also I ate alot of cheese. Meat ans cheese roll ups were good. You can also eat unsalted peanuts.

I lost 20lbs but I did phase 1 for 3 weeks and then phase 2 for like 2...so 20lbs in 5 weeks. Then I didnt need to be skinny anymore and I did gain it all back! lol....I have no self control!

yikes..that's scary. DH actually asked me last night at dinner if the diet is "..ok to do while we're trying to get pregnant?". haha.

  • I lost 50lbs on South Beach and my IBS almost completely went away.  This website was really helpful: https://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=26395

The 30 minute cookbook is really good, too.

PM me if you have any Qs!

  • The recipe book is really helpful. I did pretty good on it a while back. I am just such a picky eater but once you are through phase1 you don't really crave carbs anymore. I think it would be fine while TTC because it us really anott lifestyle changes and the guy who developed it was a cardiac MD and it is really heart healthy. I would always check with you doc first to make sure though. The nest part is once you are past the first phase you get to add back in almost all fruits and veggies. FYI strawberrys have the lowest carbs. GL and you can PM me if you have questions.
