Hello all! I am 40 as is DH. We have been married for 3 years and have just (finally) decided to TTC.
I have seen my OB and had a transvaginal US (questionable fibroid) which she said looked good. It woke us up to the realties and made us decide we need to quit stalling and just go for it. Anyway, she also wanted me to have a mammogram (baseline due to my age.)
I've been on BCP for years now and she had said that she wanted me to have 3 cycles off before we TTC. But my gut says to try as soon as possible (I'm not getting any younger!) I have a preconception appt for bloodwork, etc in a couple weeks. I plan to have my mammogram right around that time too.
Here's my dilemma: I'm due to start my next pack of BCP this week. Should I take them one more month & have the mammogram done? Or would it be alright to have the mammogram in 2 weeks? (about the time I'm ovulating?) Does it take time for the hormones to get out of your system?
I'm scared of doing the wrong thing but I'm anxious too. Sorry for the long post but thanks for reading!
Re: New & Nervous!
Welcome!
It took me 5 months to get my period after I went off BCP. If I were you, I would go off them now. Everyone is different, but I have read several posts from others who have gone 5 months to 1 year to get regular again after going off BCP. I'm 41 and this is only my 2nd cycle after finally getting AF again in March.....
I wouldn't wait any longer...
Hello and welcome! This is a great board.
Pitch the pills - STAT. Can take some time to regulate a period.
Good luck!
Thank you all for the warm welcome and advice!
I have no idea where this journey will take us or how long of a wait we are in for, but it's nice to know there's a board like this full of people who are willing to share their experiences.
Now I guess I need to call the pharmacy and tell them to cancel my auto-refill!
LOL, yes get that cancelled. Have you read Taking Charge of your Fertility and thought about charting?
Those were the single two best pieces of advice I got from here, and I really recommend both!
No, I hadn't heard of that book before. Thanks for the heads up. I'll pop into the bookshop this weekend and pick it up.
As for charting, I guess I'll wait and see what happens once I'm off BCP.
Jeesh, there's so much to figure out! Thanks again for all the helpful comments.
Go off the BCP! I would not wait!
When I was younger my OB said to wait TTC a few month after going off BCP because your lining is still thin and you chance of miscarrying is higher. However, starting to try at 38 she had another opinion due to my age (and actually sent me right to the RE after only trying for 3 months). Sadly we've been trying for a year now but I do not regret going off BCP and starting immediately. I was so excited to get my first AF so I could start tracking/testing!
Good luck!
I agree with Cathy! You absolutely need TCOYF! It is the most informative book you can have when trying to get pregnant. And charting is sooo helpful. No stressing over a "late" period, and you can have information ready to show your doctor if needed.
I would go off the pill now. My OB told me that we just needed one period after BCP before we could start trying. I wish we'd started trying sooner, but can't go back in time. I just encourage others to try sooner now! Maybe I'm getting pushy in my old age!
Good luck!
I agree...no more BCP...my cycle regulated itself right away and I did O on my own too...so it is definitely worth a try considering that it may take you time to regulate.
Welcome and good luck!! Hope your stay here is short!
Welcome and good luck to you!
Dump the pills and join the party!?
