wow, OB open to induction week of due date

i asked my OB how late he would let me go prior to talking induction. surprisingly he said that if my cervix was "favorable" that he would be willing to discuss it anytime the week of my due date! i'm not 100% sure how i feel about it. i am happy that he won't make me go 2+ weeks late, as i would be nervous (friend of a friend had a stillborn 2 weeks after her due date) and am of course anxious to have the baby, but am not sure i would feel right inducing *on* the due date either.

Re: wow, OB open to induction week of due date

  • i was induced last saturday and so far no baby, so they set my induction for tomorrow, since they dont want to have anyone go past 41 weeks (which is a sat, and its too busy so they wont induce me then)...and in doing research, i found that there is a chance of c sections with going into labor naturally on your own, and with induction (past due date that is) there is a fraction of a percent that a section will be more likely...my ob said they induce as early as 39 weeks if cervix was favorable..but i chose to wait until i was overdue...

That's okay.  Go with what you are comfortable with.  FWIW, I had scheduled induction for DD around her due date -- I think a day before or something -- and she came before then.  But given my swelling the dr was willing to induce because he thought it would be successful.  He's already mentioned that with my 2nd kid, he thinks I could follow the same path.

  • wow that is amazing how flexible your doc is!  They usually won't even discuss induction until you're a week over at my clinic and then they won't do it until you're 10 days over

  • I was induced on my due date with my last pregnancy. The induction failed and I ended up having a c-section. Although everything ended up working out in the end- healthy baby- I would suggest that you wait as long as you can for your body to start things for you. I can't say that my outcome would have been any different had I waited but I don't know that it would have killed me to wait it out either. Oh and BTW, I begged my OB to induce me so the whole fiasco was kind of my fault.

    GL!?

  • i like the idea of the baby coming when he/she is ready.  but i haven't heard person stories like you have about stillborns.  it's just odd that in other countries (england, france, austrailia, etc) they aren't so big on inducing and are having better birth rates than here in the us.

my SIL in england had her two babies each 2 weeks late, naturally.  my doc won't let me go past 10 days. :(
