Bike helmets in the bike trailer

After not being able to get the bike seat on DH's bike for DS we ended up with one of those bike trailers instead. Bought DS a bike helmet for his birthday and we're ready to go.

Instead it was a big fail. DS hates the helmet. I understand why the poor guy was just baking in there. DH thinks he'd do fine in the trailer without one on our suburban sidewalks. I just don't know. I thought it was a state law.

Well I looked it up. It is a state law in NY where I'm from. It's not out here in IL, not even in our county or city.

I just don't know if I'm comfortable with DS not wearing one. I guess maybe if we're just around the park or something, but certainly not if we actually bike somewhere where we'd have to be in the street or crossing a street.

WDYT?

Re: Bike helmets in the bike trailer

  • we have the trailer and bike helmet. but i must say we often leave the helmet off because if he wants to put his head back in the trailer, he cant because the helmet is in the way. i know he should wear it but it just is not practical in the trailer.

That too, I don't think he can put his head all the way back. I worried this with the bike seat too, which I would certainly require a helmet then. But strapped into the trailer he's not so exposed.

I also need to find a new helmet for him if we use one. I thought he'd make the minimum sizing on it which is 19.5". He's .5" below that and I guess that's still leaves a lot of space.

  • We will take the helmet off when we are on a trail with no motorized vehicles.  If we are anywhere that there will be cars or traffic the helmet is on.  DD also hates the helmet.  We've been taking it in the house and putting it on her every once in a while so that she gets used to it.  She may cry when we put it on, but she never minds when the trailer starts moving

  • I am less concerned about it but dh insists ds wear a helmet even in the trailer. He also thinks it's important that we're consistent and don't send him the message that sometimes it's necessary and sometimes it's not.

  • I don't have one, but isn't it possible for them to tip over if the person on the bike should happen to fall?  I don't think they're all THAT protected in the trailer.  If it's the law in some places, I would take that to mean that it's probably a good idea.
  • I should look up our state law.  DS's head is so small that the smallest helmet we could find at the local bike shop is still too big even with the extra padding.  DS can't see a thing and looks very uncomfortable with it on.  I don't feel comfortable with him not wearing one, so I don't know what to do.
