I'm frustrated and need to vent. I have been working this "temp to perm" position for nearly 6 months. I was supposed to have been hired on no later than 90 days after starting. At approx 45 days after starting the partner that I work for told the office manager that he did want to hire me. Right around that time we had firmwide layoffs. Okay, so I understand that they can't go and hire me when they have just laid people off, but that was months ago. Since then I have been checking in with the office manager at least once a week on the status. Every week he tells me "they are putting it in the budget this weekend" or "they are having a partners meeting this week and we will know" or "the request is being submitted this week" and then when I follow up, I am told, "oh sorry, the request has not been submitted" or "the meeting has been postponed", etc. It has now been six months that I have been receiving the shrug off and I am really frustrated. My office manager just sent me an emailing once again saying the "meeting has been postponed. I'm sorry LA, you must feel so abused by this situation". Well, as a matter of fact, I DO. I LOVE this firm, but I need health insurance and security. I need to know that I am an employee rather than a temp. On top of everthing else this AF is the worst that I have ever had my entire life and it was our last hope of becoming parents in 2009. I really had myself convinced that 2009 would be our year. So much for positive thinking.
I just needed to vent. Don't bother sending any dust my way. My dust receptors apparently don't work for anything.
I just received the below email from my office manager (blanks for privacy). WWYD? Do you think it is time for me to start looking for another job?
It's really not a [partner] issue. [Parnter] has already said he would like to convert you to a regular hire. Believe it or not, filling this position requires the approval of the firm's CEO. Before the recommendation gets to him, it must go to the Director of Operations, the Senior V.P. of Operations and the head of the firm's litigation department. All of them have to sign off on it and the CEO may still reject it. Since the firm is in a hiring freeze, the CEO does not want to make an exception for fear that everyone will want an exception. I am communicating with the Director of Operations about it and trying to provide her with all of the justification she needs to make a recommendation. I wish I could be more promising but we are facing an uphill battle right now.
Re: Updated: (WWYD?) My dust receptors are broken
I am so sorry. Vent away.
Sweetness... sending you hugs and a few pitcher's of Margarita's. Screw 2009... 2010 is a better year to have a baby (so I keep telling my self)
Thinking of you
This is the part that pisses me off. I mean, if any one of those people who keep postponing the meetings had THEIR job security/ health insurance on the line, I bet things would have gotten done sooner.
tons of hugs to you. tons.
I'm sorry. I've been thinking my dust receptors are broken too - every time I've asked lately, the situation has fallen through. But I keep telling myself it just wasn't part of the big plan. I know one of the instances for me turned out to be much better that the dust didn't "work".
Even number years are great to have babies. I'm thinking 2009 is the year to get knocked up and 2010 is the year to have your baby(ies).
*hugs*
That sucks. I'm sorry.
Re: Your Update. . .
Honestly, I'd look for another job. Of course keep the one you've got in case something works out, but if it were me, I'd worry that they'd just keep me as temp due to the ridiculous approval process + the crappy economy. You deserve better!
Hehe, I love the Zombie Hugs!
Nothing is better than a long, warm (zombie) hug.
I know how you feel - when I started with my company, I was "temp" and told if they wanted to keep me, they'd make me permanent after 90 days. Ummm 5 months later I was still temp. Come to find out, they had been hiring "temps" with the promise to make them permanent for over a year, and letting them all go during that 90 days. They hadn't counted on wanting to keep me! So they were acting stupid instead of making me permanent and kept stringing me along. I went out and found another damn job! Now granted, this was 5 years ago in a better economy, but when I quit, I got home to a phone call from a VP begging me to stay. It took a push on my part to get them to take action. I know in this economy that is scarier, but they obviously want you. I say look for another job. That way you have one in case they act like real jerks, and maybe it will be the push they needed to make you permanent!
AND 2010 is SO the year to have a baby! Think of how easy the math will be! Hehe it'll be so easy to keep track of how old your child is. Cause you know we are going to be like our parents and never remember our kids names/ages!! So when you have your little one in 2010, it's just something making your life eaiser, instead of having to do the math from 2009. Bleh! Hehe
More ((((HUGS)))) and vent away anytime.

I think that they are stringing you around. We are on a highering freeze as well but have occassionally hired needed folks. I would try to find another job. However, I could see why you have been hanging on... they have great IVF benefits compared to other companies. I am not sure what I would do in your situation as it would be really hard to walk away from any possibility of IVF benefits.
I know that you think your dust receptors are broken but I am going to send you buckets and buckets of dust in a dust storm!
Married and it feels so good!
Sorry you are going through this! I'm with the other posters, I'd look for another job and then make a decision about what to do. That may push them in to make you permanent, or it may open a whole other opportunity you didn't even think about.
Tell AF to suck it. 2010 is a great year to have a baby.
