Swelling Fingers and Rings

I am 22 weeks pregnant and I can no longer wear my wedding rings. ?I noticed two weeks ago that my feet were started to swell (hence I cannot see my ankle bone as much as before) and that my ring finger was feeling uncomfortable because of my rings. ?Has this happened to anyone this early in their pregnancy? ?Someone told me to stop wearing my rings because there have been situations where they had to be cut off in the delivery room, etc. ?If you did not wear your rings any longer on your hand did you leave them secured and at home or place them on a necklace? ?Any comments would be appreciated.

Re: Swelling Fingers and Rings

  • everything didn't start to swell until a couple weeks back.

i keep my rings at home.

  • I take my rings off when washing hands, when cleaning, doing dishes, before bed/shower, etc. On weekends, if I'm at home, I don't wear my rings. Once they got too tight during my pregnancy, I took them off and put them in the little box they live in when I'm not wearing them. I couldn't care less if anyone saw me pregnant and ring-less. For a while I wore another, larger size, ring on my finger but when that one got too tight too, I just stopped wearing rings altogether. Someone I know had to have hers cut off at 30-something weeks. You could wear them on a necklace
  • I try to take my rings off at night and if they don't fit the next morning, I just don't wear them. The swelling has been inconsistent so far. Sometimes, I can do both rings comfortably, sometimes just my band, sometimes nothing.

I also just noticed that my ankles seems particularly fat lately - I wouldn't really call them swollen, but definitely less defined.

    The DC Nest. Winers welcome.

  • i also take my rings off at night and when i was pregnant i just didn't wear them when they were tight, left them at home.  my feet started swelling pretty early in my pregnancy around 24-26 weeks.  they would be fine until 1/2 way through the day (i'm an elementary teacher) and then after lunch they would swell.  by the time i went to bed they would be down again.  and so it went until summer when they just swelled and never went down!  i could wear my rings until the 4th of july weekend, little man was born a month later.
  • My feet and ankles swelled earlier, but I was able to wear my rings until about 36 weeks.  I'm glad I took them off then though, because any later I would have had problems.  Plus in L/D, I had the I/V on my left hand and it more than DOUBLED with fluid.  So everyone should take their rings off pre-L/D even without earlier swelling.

When I stopped wearing my rings I just left them safe at home - no rings.  I still don't wear my e-ring and another favorite ring because the settings sit high and I occasionally scratch DD by accident if I wear them.

  • Mine started swelling around then.  I took off my rings and switched to flip flops.

  • I wear mine around my neck, just started this week - I also noticed over the past week that my ankles have effectively disappeared.  Don't worry, you're normal!  My rings are heirlooms from DH, so he panicked and begged me to put them on a chain before they got stuck!

  • It could be the warm weather as much as the pregnancy - I'm at 21w5d and noticed my fingers were kind of fat today and my ankles puffy for the first time.  But I spent the whole day on my feet, and it's warm, so I think that has as much to do with it as anything else.

  • I had to stop wearing my rings about a month left of my pregnancy.  My ankles go so swollen around that time too.  I'm on my feet all day since I'm a teacher and I would go home and just prop my legs up and not move from the couch.

  • I forget what week I was (maybe somewhere around 28 weeks my hands and ankles/feet started to swell.  I was a teacher so I was on my feet all the time and being outside at recess made me sweaty and swell.  I took my rings off about that time and put them on my chain with my cross and wore them that way all the way up until we left for the hospital.

  • My hands actually started swelling at night in my first trimester. ?I can still wear my engagement ring but my wedding band has been retired to a chain around my neck. ?I'm 21 weeks now and am at the moment wearing a compression glove on my left hand.
