NBR: "The Austin Tea Party." Tea? Really? That's the direction you want to go?

I got offered a job in Austin a few days ago so DH and I have been kicking around the idea of moving there.  But we really don't know much about Austin so I've been googling and otherwise dinking around on the internet to try to get a better sense for it while we mull it over.

I keep finding stuff like this article.

Okay, I get people don't like paying taxes.  I get people don't like the bail out.  And both of those things tend to be more true if you're Republican and you're in a Red State like Texas.  And if you're pissed about something a peaceful protest with catchy rhetoric is the way to go. Fair enough.

But a "Tea Party"?  Seriously?  That's what you came up with?

I get that they're trying to use the symbolism of The Boston Tea Party but back then tea had, you know, relevance since it was a highly politicized everyday staple that was being taxed all to hell without representation by the people who were paying the taxes.  So a bunch of pissed of dudes took over some ships in Boston Harbor and chucked the tea overboard like, "Suck it, King George!  We're not paying taxes on this sh!t. And we're at the end of our rope with being your b!tch, I mean, colony."

Aside from the fact that Texas has representation and isn't anyone's colony, now tea is cheap as hell, bearly taxed at all, and generally apolitical.  It's not like Obama and his buddies are wandering around drinking tea and Perry and his buddies forsake tea at all costs because they associate it with being a tax'n'spend liberal pansy-a$$.  Pour the average American's booze or coffee into the harbor and people might be annoyed but no one gives a f*ck about tea.

You could go with something that is heavily taxed or highly politicized... But The Austin Cigarrette Party or The Austin Unregulated Mortgage Traunche Party don't quite have that winning populist ring to them...

Or... here's a thought... You could play off a more relevant American historical event.  It's not like it's tough to draw parallels between this and the Great Depression.  And you're not helping yourselves out with the whole not looking BSC thing by being a Southern state clamoring about secession.

::: sigh :::

Um...this is what they did.  Symbolism.

Protests are about making a statement.  They made a statement -- with all the media attention on these tea parties they succeeded.

  • it makes me think that texas's history books are 400 years old.  they missed the whole point ofthe tea party.

taxation without representation.  there is a hell of a lot of repsentation for TX in washington if i'm not mistaken.  larks, do NOT move to TX.  it sucks.  it's a liberal's hell.

  • Austin wasn't the only one...they were all across the US yesterday and expect more.  People are starting to get pissed off about the bailouts and I think it is just going to get louder.  It is a concept that is supposed to catch people's attention.

It is more stop bailing out all of these companies and bankrupt the future of the country for our children and grandchildren.

Kind of interesting that Fox News covered it but not as much with CNN and the networks.  Why?  Because they are more liberal than people want to believe.  They think they are balanced which they are not.

?Austin is not a liberal's hell... the rest of Texas, maybe so, but Austin and San Antonio are pretty wonderful cities. (And this from a liberal New Englander who ended up in Texas after getting married...)

?I love Austin. Political demonstrations aside.?

I know it's symbolism and I know it's working.  I'm still lmao-ing that they picked tea.

And I know it wasn't just in Austin either.  A bunch of "tea parties" happened on Tax Day.  I "get it" I'm just really glad I did my kegels because it strikes me as such a hilariously odd historical parallel.

  • austin is great for liberals.

if you like living amongst 50,000 college kids...

  • i do live on the border of west TX, so i'm around the most backwards, rednecky, oilfield workers you can get.  sorry to generalize.

? It was plastered all over the news, yesterday and today.

  • Austin is the liberal oasis in red-state Texas.

Hell, there's a reason people proudly display bumper-stickers that read "Keep Austin Weird."

You will love it--it is so different from anywhere in TX.  Music, arts, it's just a lot of fun.

Yeah.  It's all over the place.  And it was all over Fox News especially because they're conservative and supposedly had a hand in spreading the word about the event.  It's not like MSNBC and CNN as biased and Fox is the voice of reason.  They're all biased.

this exactly.... Austin is weird. it's considered weird probably because its the only non conservative place here..

Yeah, somebody said that below.  I guess I was clicking the remote at the wrong times!  But I was somewhat liberal when I lived in Canada and have been swaying more towards a right side since moving here.  CNN and such are more liberal than Fox is conservative, IMHO.

I think the point is that a lot of people feel that their elected representatives are no longer serving the interest of the public - we may have people who have been hired to represent us, but in reality many feel that they are not doing that.

There is a general feeling (not just among conservatives) that politicians seem to only care about money and power, not their constituents. It is frustrating to the "little guy," who can't see a way to change it.

  • Austin is pretty much the coolest city I have ever been to and I would give my left eye to live there.  It's not a Liberal's hell.  Quite the opposite actually.  Larks, Austin has a really cool group of gals on the local boards (both Nest and Bump) who would probably be more than happy to answer any questions for you.
  • whatever. texas is going to secede. then if you want to move here, you are going to have to be naturalized and take a test on whether or not you know where the apostrophe in yall goes and how to use "fixin to". itll be great. we have 150+ corporate headquarters here - we'll be just fine with our never-ending dr pepper, frito lay chips, and HP computers.

Me too.  I have no idea how to correctly use "fixin' to" and on top of that I'm unclear as to what "fixin's" are in a culinary context.  Maybe we can't really move there after all...

  • LOL well since Im from IL and dh is from OR, we only have ever said "fixin' to" once or twice. but when I caught dh say it for the first time, I about died laughing. I do say y'all though and "put it up" instead of "put it away" which is weird and something i only heard in texas.

This Texas dialect is a lot like what I grew up with here in Florida. Except we actually break down "fixin' to" even further to "finna." We also put things "up" and "hit the light" instead of turning it on or off. Do y'all say "hissy fit" or "conniption fit?"

lol yes. if you go to "dublin, texas" (or a certain number of miles around there), target around DFW, or tom thumb around here, you can get "dublin dr pepper. when i went to school in waco, i would drive to dublin every other month and get the cans with the sugar cane in it. the dr p museum is in waco, but to get the sugar cane ones, they are $$$ there and only in bottles. (target/tom thumb only have the bottles too).

they are so good. dh has a dr p shirt that says "the rest of the country should be grateful we export" LOL
