Is it true that you're not supposed to "do the deed" when camping?

Because the smell will attract bears?

MH just told me this and I don't know if he is yanking my chain or what.

  • I love doing it in a tent!

Tell him it's not the smell of sex that attracts the bears.  It's his creative use of leftover campfire hotdogs that sends them bears your way.  Plain old sex should be fine.

  • Hmmm I've never known a man to turn down sex so it might be legit.  I have a huge bear phobia so now I will never have sex while camping.

  • DH has never mentioned that.  I guess he's willing to risk it.

  • I've heard that it can be a concern if you're camping in a deep wilderness area- like when I've been backpacking in the Smokies and you stay so deep in the woods that you have to use pulley systems to hoist your bags way up high in the sky at night to keep the bears away. I've also heard that if you're on your period that it might attract bears, LOL.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that those are applicable at all to your typical campground in a state park- it's really more of just a deep backwoods concern.

  • I have heard of this with backpacking.  They say the same thing about backpacking when you're menstruating.  That supposedly attracts bears as well.
  • It can, yes, but it's more likely for the bears to be really afraid of humans and their stuff.  There are only grizzly bears in a couple of states and those are the ones I'd be truly worried about.

I always take certain precautions when backpacking in bear country (hang the food, clothes I cooked in, dishes, toothpaste, etc.) at night, but I never worry about having sex or having my period when camping (though I have joked to my DH that I'm "bear bait" on certain trips).

    Bear attacks are SO rare.

  • Oh god, don't let my husband hear that, we'll never go camping again, He already stays up half the night listening for wildlife!
  • Cool I hate camping.

Maybe I can use this as an excuse to get out of it.
