Do you think I would regret taking a job similar to my last?

As most of you know I hated my last job working in a call center doing reservations sales. I was good at it, just hated feeling chained to a headset, the disgruntled public, etc. Well, the job market is clearly ass in the can so there aren't a lot of options here. One of the companies I've been avoiding is having a job fair this week for Customer Service Reps which means... another call center type position complete with headset. I really feel like I can't be picky b/c I can't be unemployed forever.. but then the thought of being back in that position makes my stomach turn.

  • How about taking a job, but while you are working, look for one that you really want?
  • Loading the player...
  • Oh, I know it's presumptuous of me since I haven't even been to the job fair, interviewed, etc. but I like thinking ahead.

edit: Butterbeans, I'm starting to think that's what is going to end up happening anyway...

  • Seriously Belle in today's market, I'd take any job that is decent and will pay the bills.  It is just a craptastic market.  I would also keep looking for something else but in the meantime, it looks better on your resume to be employed.  I know it is lousy to hate your job (been there) so I say this and cringe because I know it is no fun to be at a job you don't like.

I can't say it any better.

  • Can you use it as a stepping stone?! I mean just think, a job means you can save up and get a place for you and A- NO MORE MAMA DRAMA! :) I dunno, I don't always love my job but it pays well and I need to work, so I just suck it up and go. I would go, try to get a position but also continue to look for better positions while earning some dough! GL woman!

    ditto this.

  • A job is a job and if pays the bills then there is nothing to regret - but I agree with Butterbeansmama keep looking.

  • Thanks. I suppose I didn't need to ask to know the answer.
I'm used to hating my job and crying, feeling sick to my stomach so I'm sure I can suck it up if I have to. I do have bills that have to be paid, a child to feed/clothe and need to move on living-wise.

I would scrub toilets to get out of your living situation.  (that was my least favorite job!).  Also you really need something on your resume before you start to look unemployable.  It's such a tough market.

  • You are going to feel so much better to be working again. And, it will get you out of that house, and who knows, maybe it wont be anything like it was before?
  • Is this with an airline?  For some reason, I thought you worked for an airline before.  In any case, a company with a call center has other departments as well.  There is always the chance that once you get on with the company you will be able to apply for other internal positions that aren't necessarily advertised to the public.

I asked about the airline because my sister worked in res at Continental.  She eventually moved into a couple different HR positions that they never advertised outside of the company.

  • Ditto the looking while you work sentiment. Also: Hello!! I miss you, too!!

and: Since it is total lemons, make you some lemonade, girl. You know you're good at it, perhaps if you seriously go in there and tear it up, you can get promoted and move through the ranks- you might really enjoy something more management-y fresh.

You can never go wrong by working as hard as you can and doing the best job you can- whatever it is.

good luck!! I hope you find employment peace soon!
