low supply issues - any input?

I started Ep'ing yesterday and have been pumping every two hours (maybe one or two stretches of 3 hrs last night) and all I've gotten is 4 oz - FROM BOTH BREASTS!!!!  I BF'ed in the hospital as often as I could - about 8 times a day and I bf'ed when I got home for about 1.5 days before I just couldnt take it anymore.  We've been gving them formula since last night bc I wasnt sure how much I would produce and obviously we needed them to eat.

So now I'm still pumping every 2 hrs and get barely .25 oz from each breast at each session.  This seems low to me - but what do I know, I've never done this before.  Any input / suggestions? FWIW I'm 6 days PP.

Re: low supply issues - any input?

  • First try to relax (I know haha, easier said than done).  Your supply is just coming in and it takes weeks to build up.  Sounds to me that your supply is just right this early on.

Second, why are you EPing instead of BF?  I don't EP but it seems like EPing is MUCH more work than BF, and I'd think especially so with twins!!  If you're having issues with the breast (latching/pain), I'd suggest getting an LC to help ASAP.  The babies are going to be the best thing to get your supply going.  Giving formula will slow down the supply vs demand process.

Good luck, it is SO hard early on, but it DOES get better!!

I agree. The babies will help get the supply up quicker than pumping. But when I pumped in the beginning it was pathetic the amount I got! But I couldn't imagine BF'ing twins. I was nursing DD all day/night it felt like.

  • i'm having the same problem. 10 days pp. but i only get 1oz/day. dx with pcos also. have done some reading about low supply and pcos. there is an herb... goats rue that may help. i haven't tried it yet but thought i'd pass the info along

  • supplementing will make them nurse less which will make you produce less. Let them nurse to build your supply if you can.?

My DS wouldnt latch so I had to pump to establish supply and I started out with about what you are making. It was literally drops the first couple days. I would call a LC and start working with them. it will make all the difference in the world. ?

  • Your supply may seem "low" to you in these early days but your milk is still coming in.  The babies are getting the colostrum from you which is exactly what they need at this time, and stimulating you to produce the right amount for them.  You can do it!

It is a very intense time (and I can't imagine what it's like with twins) but hang in there--you can do almost anything for a few weeks of your life!  And the benefits once you get through these early days are wonderful.  Give a call to your local LLL leader (www.llli.org) or LC and get support from them.

Drink plenty of fluids and nurse lying down, if you can, so that you get as much rest as possible.  Listen to relaxing music, soak in the tub (you can nurse in the tub, too, just have someone on hand to pass you the baby once you're in), and take deep breaths.
