2nd Trimester

Baby has stopped moving... Normal or should I be worried?

I experienced lots of very strong baby movement (like strong enough to be easily felt and seen from the outside) for about 2 weeks, between weeks 18-20. It was very regular and predictable, and I was learning when to expect her to be active and "awake."

Anyways, for the last 3 or 4 days I haven't really felt any movement at all. I think I might feel it a bit every now and then (maybe once a day), but it's so light that it's hard to even tell if it's food digesting or baby moving. It's also not predictable like it was before, and there's no movement at all during times when I could count on her being active before.

Should I be concerned? Or is this totally normal (and I'm already being a paranoid mother)?

  • I had this happen... I didn't feel her for 5 days and I went in and her HB was totally normal.  I think they just have different growth spurts and move around more.

  • It's hard to say at this point, you're so early on.  The baby could have just moved to a different position where her movement isn't as noticeable.  This happened with me and just the past couple of days I'm feeling her more again.  As long as you're feeling something, even if it's light, it's still movement.  You could always try to drink some OJ or super ice cold water and lay down for a bit, if you feel her at all, I wouldn't worry.

  • I am having the same problem and am trying to not get upset.  I was starting to feel the baby everyday and the baby was getting into a pattern but for the past few days I have not had the kind of kicking movement that I was getting used to.  Again, I am trying to not get upset because I have read that it is normal but it still bugs me.  Maybe after I get back to work (I had the week off) the baby will start up again since I will be back on my normal routine and the baby hears the kids at school again.

  • Do you have a friend that owns a doppler you could borrow?  Our neighbor has one.  I would never buy one myself, but it might be a relief to hear the heart.  Actually, I've heard you can also use a stethescope, I think once you hit 18 or 20 weeks.

I thought of this too - but I don't know anyone who has a doppler... I think that would be just the kind of reassurance I need. But I don't want to go to urgent care just to hear a heartbeat (though it might come to that if she doesn't start moving around in the next day or two - for peace of mind if nothing else).

  • You are too early for consistent movement--you probably won't feel daily consistent movement until 28 weeks.  The baby probably shifted itself to a different spot since there's so much room still for them.  I wouldn't worry too much about it now--it's too early!

  • Just another thing that makes me feel better.... my doctor told me I won't start doing daily kick counts until 28 weeks because it is just not consistent until then.  I am sure it is "normal" to have days where we don't feel them yet, but there's really nothing "normal" when you are pregnant for the first time... at least for me.
