Vicks?

C woke up a little stuffy this morning.  He doesn't have a fever and is acting fine, but his nose sounds a little stuffy when he breathes.  Does anyone know if it is okay to put a little Vicks on his chest to help clear him up?  I would call the doctor, but they aren't open on Saturdays and I don't think this constitutes an emergency.

Re: Vicks?

  • I think I heard that's dangerous for infants because it can numb them so the forget to breathe or swallow or something like that.
Am I just making this up?  Or has anyone else heard that?

I would just squirt some baby saline up his nose.  Works like a charm!

  • I used the Vicks baby rub when DS had a little cold. It wasn't nearly as strong, but plenty strong for him. Make sure you wash it off too before you take him outside.

    Good!  I'm not (totally) crazy!

  • I think the current research is that it can potentially irritate their lungs and make symptoms worse but I don't think it makes them stop breathing.  Having said that though, we use the baby vicks which is much more mild and is supposed to be for infants over the age of 3 months.  We've been using that since 2 months.  I wouldnt use the regular strength for a 2 month old.
  • My pedi told me I could use Baby Vicks even though it says 3 mo+.  Saline drops worked wonders though!
