Let's say you have a cousin who has a kid and the kid's name is "Jaxon" (they sometimes call him Jax). So that would make him your second cousin? I'm not quite sure - anywho imagine also that you have 47 cousins (on just that side of the family) and you lost count on how many second cousins - so its not like you see or talk to these people much.

Ok so now you are having a baby and if its a boy - you would like to name the baby "Jackson" (also your father's name is Jack and said baby would be named this after him) and use the nickname Jack.

Any issue with this?

Not at all. Especially if it is a second cousin. Plus it is spelled different and the nickname is different.

My sister did that. We have a third cousin named Isaiah and she named her baby Isaiah. Considering we only see said cousins once a year at a funeral I think it was ok.

I guess it depends on how close your family is. Do you see them often?

That name is totally fine. Both my sister and my cousin have kids with the same name.

I'm not big into people claiming names. As long as it's not your sibling, I think the name is fair game.

It reminds me of when people would claim entire wedding months--You just get one day!

I don't think so. But then again I don't think it's a problem to name your child whatever you want...even if you know someone with that name or have that name in your family. What I hate is when you tell people what you want to name your unborn child and someone else steals that name before you can use it. That really gets to me!

I see nothing wrong with this. The child is your second cousin. In our family you only call dibs on names with people who are in your immediate family.

it doesnt bother me, but i wandered if other people will think i was weird. with such a big family, there arent a whole lot of names left!

Nope, My sister named her child Adrian after her husband and we have a second cousin who lives 5 min a way who named her child Adrian. No biggie they are about 5yrs apart. OUr family calls everyone by some random nick name so it really doesn't matter.

I don't think it's a problem, especially if you don't see them all the time. And not sure if it was covered in PP, but that kid is your first cousin, once removed, and your kid would be that kid's second cousin.

I don't see an issue with it. Even if you were around the child a lot, it is still okay to use the same or similar names. I named my first after my brother and one of the names we considered for the second is the name of my niece.

I don't think it's a problem to have second cousins have the same name. My first cousin's name is Laurie and my name is Lori. No big deal at all. I'm not a big fan of using Jack as a MN for Jackson, but that's just me.
