Babies: 9 - 12 Months

My SIL is smoking while pregnant right now

It KILLS me.  Yes, I judge.  People who smoke during pregnancy should have to spend a week with a NICU mom, so they understand exactly what they are willingly putting their baby at risk for.  I think of all the moms who have preemies or sick babies.  I think of Sydney and Carynne.  Those moms would do anything to have a healthy baby--so how can someone else be so cavalier with their baby's health?  To me, it's like a slap in the face to moms who give so much of theirselves for their child's welfare.

My ILs basically give tacit approval because they will stand around and smoke with her.  It disgusts me.  Then she won't drink Coke because "caffeine is bad for the baby"

Oh and I have to go to her baby shower this week and pretend like I'm so happy.

Ya, my SIL (husband's sister) did the same thing. ?I also judge when people smoke and are pregnant. ?It is ridiculous and selfish!!!

  • I totally judge... and I don't even care.  It's one thing to willingly put your own health at risk (ignoring the second hand smoke and hurting your loved ones), but when you are pregnant, how can you possibly justify smoking???

I used to work with a woman who smoked through both of her pregnancies, and drank too.  Her justification was that she had to go off her depression and anxiety meds.  Yeah.... I dunno.

    BTW, your DD is adorable!

  • Honestly, I would be a total bittch to her about this if it were my SIL.

And I would wrap up a box of Nicorette Gum in pretty baby-themed paper and give it to her at the shower.

  • I also judge!

I LOVE your siggy pics, So freakin cute!

  • I judge too.  Its the ultimate example of putting one's self above one's child.

ETA: I smoked for nine years, I know how hard it is to quit, but smoking while pregnant is just unacceptable. Period.

  • Maybe you can make up your own shower game.  Print up sheets listing the dangers of smoking while pregnant, asking the participants to choose the five worst offenders.
  • I'm just catching up on the posts from last night re: smoking while pg and I'm honestly shocked. I can't believe people do this! Having had a preemie with underdeveloped lungs, I can't imagine anyone would willing risk their babies health in this way. My DH gets lectures from our pedi about thirdhand smoke at every appt (he's a smoker). I agree, Iris, if anyone had to go look at a newborn on CPAP, they would likely not have the urge to smoke while pg again!

That is an awesome idea. I wouldn't be able to do it, though. ?:)

  • I had a lot of girls that I work with smoke while pregnant, it makes me so sad. It's just 9 months, you cant try to quit for just 9 months? I mean I know its a very hard addiction, but I am sorry, no excuses when your pregnant. It makes me very very angry!
  • I commiserate. AT Thanksgiving six years ago, my 6 month PG SIL pulled out her own pack of smokes and lit up. My sister and I were like Indifferent. And then it was a huge shock that she had all kinds of complications and went in to pre term labor with my niece.

  • I judge. My SIL smoked her entire pregnancy because her doctor said that it would be bad for the baby to quit cold turkey Surprise

I was 19 years old when I got pregnant with my oldest DS and I quit cold turkey the 2nd I got a + HPT. How is it that at 19 years old on my own I knew that I needed to quit smoking for the health of my baby yet grown women can't figure this out? I'll never know.?

  • I totally judge that and I used to smoke. I can't imagine even one puff after you knew you were pregnant.

  • It is sickening.  I have a super duper white trash cousin who smoked pot during her pregnancies and she said her doctor told her it was ok in moderation.  Bull shiiit.  Plus, she has a rare genetic disorder that makes her pregnancies high risk. I somehow doubt her high risk doc approved pot.

It's ok to judge this flat out irresponsible behavior.  I personally think my cousin's kids should be removed from her home.

  • That's awful.  I used to work for CPS in Pa. and in our building, they also had a GED class, and half the girls were pregnant, and most of them went out and smoked on their breaks, with their big, beautiful bellies and all.  So sad.  Also, one of the GAL's we worked with, was starting to talk about bringing cases against mom's who use (drugs, alcohol, cigs etc) and their babies die in utero- had a case like this before I left.  Mom had an 18 month old in care since she was 5 days old (when I removed her) and got pg again while her first daughter was in foster care.  She used cocaine, meth and alcohol, gave birth at full term and the baby did not make it- the placenta had died.  I'm rambling and a little off subject now....just made me think of that and how mom's should be held responsible for the shat they put into their bodies if it is effecting their babies.

  • I had a coworker who smoked the whole time she was pregnant and then when she had the baby she said that she wasn't going to breast feed because she smoked. UM HELLO?

  • I agree, and I used to smoke as well.  I cannot imagine doing it when pregnant, what if something were wrong with your baby?  How could you live with yourself?  I had a friend that did, and justified it because she was diabetic and diabetics have big babies, so she doesn't worry about low birthweight.  I guess already having a higher risk pregnancy didn't worry her....or all the other possible things that could happen, aside from low birthweight!
  • Both my sisters who live in France are smoking during their pregnancies. I tried to tell them that it was selfish and really bad for their babies, but they both replied to me that their obgyn's told them that it was better to smoke a little bit than being stress during the whole pregnancy! Can you believe that??? It made me so mad! I started arguing with one of my sisters but she told me that I better not bring this up again, it was none of my business... Sad, very sad if you ask me, and very selfish of them...
  • did she do any drugs before? sad as it is, i have heard of dr's say to smoke, as long as women keep off the drugs.

that being said, i quit cold turkey when i found out i was preg with aidan and it wasn't hard at all. i knew what i had to do and that was that

  • Seeing people smoke during their pregnancy gets all over me. ?I mean, I used to smoke and quit way before I was pregnant, and it wasn't that hard. ?Maybe it's harder for some people, but since it wasn't for me I don't understand why they can't do it.

That's exactly what I was going to say, darn it!  Stole my post.  Wink

  • This makes me very sad. I look at ppl who smoke, drink or do drugs and sometimes they end up with babies who are just fine. Here we are with DS and his problems and I didn't so much as look at alcohol, crossed the street away from cigarette smoke and was healthy.
  • I am there with you, I quit years ago and I quit cold turkey so like you it was not hard at all. I don't get it...
  • I judge, and I would probably judge her out loud.
  • That Pisses me off. My Idea: Make your own card with a nicu baby on it and say happy baby shower. This is what your baby will look like since you smoked with them.

  • Here is my nasty suggestion... send her an article on the effects in an unmarked enveleope... with a pack of nicorette .... one a week (maybe more) until she announces she is quitting!
