Please rec your DSLR. I'm in the market for a new camera and think I am ready for the big girl camera. I'm looking at the Nikon D60 but am open to suggestions!
I particularly love the 50mm lens that I have. It makes taking portraits so much easier (see sig pic). The Canon 50mm lens is only $90 and I think the Nikon equivalent is $200+

yes. ditto to the 50mm.
how much are you looking to spend? you could get an Xti online for cheap now bc they are discontinued.
I'm a canon girl too. I guess it just depends on your preference. Once I started I would never change because I have too many canon lenses. I have upgraded several times.
I'm a canon girl too. If this is your very first SLR you probably should stick with the XS or XTi as stated above, it's a big jump with tons to learn, most people doing recreational/good photos never even need to upgrade. I'd still be loving my XT if I didn't plan on going into business in few months! Either way, have fun!
I'm a Nikon girl. The 50 mm lens for the Nikon is about 100 bucks, not 200. They do make a 50mm 1.4 thats 300, but the 100 dollar version will do just fine for what you need. I started with Nikon because it was a tad cheaper and I couldn't tell the difference between the Canon and Nikon when I used it. Now I have a whole bunch of accessories, so I'm a NIkon chick.
I just completed a massive research project on this. I finally settled on the Olympus E-510 because it got the best Consumer Reports rating for 2009 in that price range. The Canon Rebel Xsi ranked 2nd with the Nikon D40 after that. Although there wasn't much of a different - only a few points between the Nikon and Canon.
I did a lot of research for mine too like pp. I ended up getting a Nikon D200 body from Best Buy for $600 and a separate lens from Amazon for $200. I am SO happy with it. I was going to go with something a little less but I don't want to have to upgrade in a couple of years. Whatever model you choose DSLRs are heavy so I would go handle it and try a few shots. If you are interested in only doing snap shots of your LO and just casual shooting then I would say go with a lower model.
Whether it's the best of times or the worst of times, it's the only time we've got.- Art Buchwald
if i were you i would go to cnet.com and look up reviews. its a very helpful resource.
dh and i have spent HOURS online comparing cameras. back and forth, different lenses, etc etc and in the end - i have put off buying one bc i can't decide. until the t1i came out - then i figured 'ok - do it' lol
I'm always in the minority in these posts - but I'm a Nikon girl. I have the D40 and I love it. Wouldn't change a thing, and probably won't need to upgrade for a long time. I believe that it's a tad smaller than the Rebel as well, which I liked. Really - go somewhere you can test them both out and decide which you like best ... it's a personal preference

That's interesting. I've been trolling Ebay for deals. Would anyone ever buy from Ebay?
I got my new 50mm lens off of Ebay. I probably would have bought the camera there - except I really wanted a good warrenty.
Guess where I bought my camera AND warrenty?
Yup. Circuit City.

LOL totty, up until a couple of months ago (i mean the stores were having their closing sales) we kept getting things from CC saying "buy a warranty for your tv!!" that we got from them a year before and declined the warranty. um, newsflash i dont think ill be purchasing that when you have CLOSING! on your buildings.

Ditto. I have always been a Nikon girl and always will be. I have the Nikon D50 (it's discontinued now) and would love to upgrade to the D90, but it's just not in the budget right now. I also got a 50mm for less than $100, so I'm not sure what the pp was talking about.
I bought my camera (Canon XTI) off of e-bay and got scammed. I would just research the seller first. I got my camera for $560.00 brand new with a bunch of extras including a better lens. The problem was they wouldn't send me a receipt. So my 5 year warantee will not work. I needed it too because my lens stopped working. All in all, I love my camera! I have tried my friends Nikon and it's more confusing, but that's just because I'm used to my Canon. I think you'll be happy with either camera's quality!
It's very much personal preference, both are excellent systems.
That said, I'm a total Canon girl. I have the Canon 40D and I love it. But go try to get your hands on potential Canon and Nikon models and see what fits best in your hands... that's really what it comes down to. And check out this website for tons of really good tips on all aspects of photography and cameras... you can sign up for a weekly email newsletter, too.

We buy most of our gear through Ebay (and we own a photography biz). Just make sure the seller has good feedback, and shop around.
I prefer Canon gear. Currently we have the Mark II 1D and I love it, but it's probably a bit much for what you're looking for. I'd go with the XSi.
(and really, megapixels don't really matter that much unless you plan on blowing images up to poster size!)
Re: NBR: Photogs: Canon or Nikon?
the canon t1i that comes out in may!!
(but im a canon girl)
Canon!
I've got the Rebel XS and I loooooooove it.

I will probably stay around 10. megapixels if that helps.
ETA: I will not spend over $1000 but want a good camera that I don't have to keep upgrading.
DH wants this too. We are canon ppl as well. It's a personal preference and what you get used to. Right now we have the Rebel XT.
Tales of the Wife
Ditto this.
And if you're just starting out with DSLR, I honestly would probably go with the XS over the XTi.
Is the 50mm lens the same thing as the "portrait lens" that everyone talks about? I'm a newbie to photog speak.
Thanks for the feedback thus far. Very helpful!
LOL its what im hoping for mothers day and/or my birthday

copy/paste that into the bar.
Yes, the 50mm lens is the "portrait" lens. I'm trying to find a really good pic I took with it.
EDIT:
And:
Thanks a lot ladies! I'm definitely researching my options but really appreciate the feedback and pics in siggys.
Destea- I have always enjoyed your photos! Glad to see you are going into business. Good luck!

Siggy photos were shot with my 85 mm, see pics, they were mostly shot with my 85 but I really want a 50mm 1.2 lens. Someday. Good luck!
