At what point are you going to try and get rid of the paci, crib, and bottles?
My mom took our pacis and bottles at 1 year and we got a sippy cup for our 1st birthday. She also moved our mattress from the crib to the floor. Dh thinks that 1 y/o is too young, and that they should have them until they outgrow them.
I don't know how I feel, but I definately cringe when I see 3 y/os walking around with a paci still. I have read that they should stay in a crib until 2 or 3 y/o. Just wondering everyones plans.
Re: What are your plans for pacis, bottles, baby bed...
paci: 12-18m same as with dd
bottles: around 12 m
crib: when baby is ready. My DD is just starting to transition to her big girl bed right now and she's not quite 2 1/2. If she weren't starting to try to climb out I would have no problem keeping her in there longer
I'm hesitant to give the baby a pacifier at all, but will do so because of the SIDS warnings. I need to double check, but I have read that you only need to provide the pacifier it from 1 month until 4 or 5 months and if that is the minimum, that is probably what we will try to do.
Bottles - I'm not sure. In my mind, I will try to breastfeed until 1 year and then I'm guessing we'll move onto something else (probably moving on from the bottle as well at that point?) but I am so ignorant about this stuff - I don't know what comes next... lol... I'm sure I'll figure it out by then!
Our crib converts to a toddler bed. I haven't thought yet about when we'll do the conversion.
We will start giving a sippy cup when he is able to hold his bottle on his own, but I don't think we'll take away bottles until he finishes the stored breast milk that he can continue to have for snack and drink periodically once I wean him around 1 year. No sense in wasting pumped milk!
We'll leave him in the crib until he tries to climb out of it (usually they do this around 2 years old)...then it's time (in my opinion) for a twin sized bed with the mesh rails to keep him safe on it.
you can plan all you want but until you are actually THERE you really have no idea what you will do - you can say "never" now- but you'll see how it goes then...
We had DS on all sippies by the time he was about 14mos old.
He still uses the paci for bedtime only - it's his only soothing item (he doesn't have a blankie or stuffed animal he loves) so we see no need to take it away since it's only for bedtime. He's 2y/o. I know he won't go to college with it- so i'm not worried.
as far as the crib- if we were having one baby we'd move DS to a toddler bed now- but since we needed 2 cribs and wanted them to match - we're keeping DS in his crib until he starts to climb out - he sleeps so well in there i see no reason to move him.... until it becomes dangerous ie) climbing out... or when he asks to have a big boy bed.
I used to say i'd never give my child a paci at all - but realized that it helps reduce sids, DS loved it- and it's a LOT easier to take away than thumb sucking.
With our DS we took the paci away early at 4mths but that was because he didn't seem that interested in it. We gradually moved to sippy at 11mths and by 13 mths he was using just sippy. When he turned two years in January, we converted his crib to a toddler bed.
Personally our philosophy has been "start early" and it's worked for us. ?
Bottles we easily weaned her from by 1 yr. She was introduced to a sippy at 6 mos and when we started whole milk, she only got whole milk (cold) in a sippy, never in a bottle. She quickly preferred the whole milk to formula.
Pacis -- :::sigh::: Well, she still has hers and I do wish I'd weaned at 1 yr. What we have done is try to limit the use to the crib for bedtime and naptime. She's getting less attached and eventually we will drop it. I'm just reluctant to pile on a ton of changes for her right now with the baby coming and room changes and potty training looming. I'm figuring one day we'll take the paci to build-a-bear and drop it in there.
Bed -- we are just starting the transition to her big girl bed now. She's sleeping on a mat at daycare so hopefully won't be an issue. Otherwise, she doesn't try to climb out and it's nice to not have to worry about her wandering about.
DD -- 5YO
DS -- 3YO
Amen and hallelujah!
Pacis - we plan on having a couple on hand, but no baby in our family has ever taken one, so we're just thinking that will maybe include our baby. If he does like it, probably wean at 6 mos.
Bottles - I'm staying home and EBFing as long as possible (to a point) so he will have the very occasional bottle and once he weans from the breast, I don't plan on giving him bottles.
Crib - Eh, I have no idea.
I agree with Goldie Locs! It's hard to plan those things. You have to see what your child takes to. Some like paci's. some don't. If you get pregnant again, that might determine when your child moves out of the crib, etc.
In my experience with ds # 1 .......Paci (he kept for nights and naps unitl about 20 months and then he just quit wanting them on his own)
-His dentist rec'd. that he should be through with paci's by 2 so it doesn't affect his bite.
Crib.....still in it and he will be 2 this week. We have another coming in 3 weeks, but he will sleep in the pack n' play beside our bed for at least a month before we switch the crib out and Ds #1 will get our old queen bed.
Bottle......we switched to sippy's when he turned one and transitioned him to whole milk.
