Seriously? What I think about guns in the house

Magic and Dh separating over a gun? Ok I get the whole MIL issue trust me I know that one. Luckily my DH has always backed me up. As I believe every husband should. Unless of course you are wrong and then he should tell you in the privacy of your own home that he didn't agree, Never let the mother know she put a wedge between you? (We learned that in counseling) Lucky for me my MIL was a wack job and he never took her side. Anyhow the whole gun issue. You can't control every household your child goes into and if they have a gun or not. And really is a two year going to find a gun and play with it. The owner of the gun should be more responsible and keep it locked up or out of the child's reach. I don't like the idea of guns in the house but my DH is a police officer so I had to quickly adjust. I made sure I became familiar with guns how they work and how to use one. We also make sure they are locked up in a safe or out of the reach of the children. My Dh would never just leave his gun laying around! Also you must teach your children gun safety. Because what are you going to do if they are at a friends house and their dad has a gun? We have taught our son the gun safety rules and he repeats them to us a few times a month. 1- assume all guns are loaded, 2- never point at something you don't want to shoot, 3- keep you finger of the trigger until you are ready to shoot, 4- Make sure you are on target before you shoot. My son knows these by heart! We have also told him if he's ever at a friends house and his friend gets a gun he should leave and get an adult. GUNS ARE NOT TOYS! We didn't want to make guns a mystery to him other wise they become enticing to children. He knows at anytime if he wants to see or ask questions about guns my husband will take his guns out and show him. They have gone shooting (he's only 6 mind you) And my husband lets him help when he cleans the guns. To my son guns are not something "cool" they are not "toys" now they are just another thing my husband has or other people have that should always be handles with great safety. He knows that they can be harmful and that he should never touch one with out adult supervision. We plan on raising our baby with the same knowledge.

I think she went a little over board with the whole situation, If you knew guns were in the house you should have just talked to you IL about some rules you would like to have when your children are there. DO NOT TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO FEAR THEM. EDUCATE THEM.

I'm sure some people will flame me for writing this and posting on here. But I don't care flame away. It was something I read and felt impelled to respond. Have a lovely night.

  • I hate to say it but I agree with you on this one.

(although if your MIL is a whackjob then so are you...and really we don't need your help defending our positions here)

I wasn't helping any of you. I was just stating something I felt strongly about. Maybe she will read some of this and in the morning realize she over reacted. It really wasn't for the benifit of any of you. And PS. You don't know my MIL. Anyone who wishes bad things about your pregnancy or children has issues.

  • I see absolutely no reason for the average person to keep a gun in the house at all.

I live in Canada, so maybe the mindset is different?  I don't know a single person who owns a gun...

I think there are plenty of reasons.  But I also don't see the point of telling everyone you know that you do have a gun in your house, if you are using it for protection.  I don't think it's the kind of information that you should just blurt to the world.  I think the owners and people living in the house should know, and if you are about to use it to protect yourself ...the person you are aiming it at needs to be warned.
  • I've read numerous studies that indicate that a gun in a house is much more likely to kill an innocent person than a person intending to cause harm.  So that's part of my reasoning.

But I did make sure to say "average" person because there are obviously invidivual circumstances to consider.

I think the original poster has a point about teaching gun safety.  But still, kids will be kids no matter how well you teach them sometimes, which is why it's up to the ADULTS to be responsible and not leave guns lying around all willy-nilly.

If Magic's post is truth, it sounds like the gun was just placed in an unlocked pantry?  If kids are going to be around, that's just plain stupid.

I really don't think it's fair to say she overreacted now that she's posted more on the story (not sure if you read that part, though).  Sounds like HE left because he's mad that she said something to her MIL about wanting the guns locked up when the kids are around.  To me, it sounds more like he's being immature and leaving because there was a little conflict...so not so much about the gun so much as him "siding" with his mom over his wife.  At least that's what it looks like to me.

  • I wrote that in the OP..that it's more about the DH siding with the MIL over his kid or wife.

I highly doubt this is truthful though, i'm pretty sure it's FON. It may have still happened but i'm sure the details are off. She only has a boyfriend, not a husband and it's easier to break up with a girlfriend than to just leave your wife over something stupid..ya know?

  • I'll be sad if she is FON.  Hasn't Magic been around for awhile?  I actually had some good chats with her....:S

  • She's only been around a couple months. I had a good talk with her one night to, but i've never fully trusted her. I just wish she'd outright deny it already or post a pic or something.

I don't think there is anything wrong with owning a gun. DH's father had one the entire time DH was growing up. DH will have one when our kids are growing up. Will I tell people IRL that we own a gun? No, but I respect DH's decision to own one for protection. I guess that's the Republican in me.?
  • I have no problems with having guns in the house. My dad is a police officer and we always had guns in the house growing up. My dad always took his gun with him everywhere, family events, ect. He never locked it up but always put it up on a high shelf where the kids couldn't get to it. We always knew we were not to touch it and the adults always kept an eye on the kids.?
  • Mommashell, I'm kind of doubting you even read the entire post by MB. She's not upset that there is a gun at her ILs, she is upset that it is being left in an area that is easily accessible by children.

Also, it doesn't seem like she and her DH are separating over the gun, but more over the fact that He wouldn't stand up for her and support her feelings.

I really hope that MB is FON and this is all MUD because if it isn't it seems to be a really sad situation.

    Ditto this!!

  • I live in a more rural area. and pretty much everyone I know here owns guns.  Hunting is a huge way of life where I live... I even hunt!  Venison is a very healthy and inexpensive alternative to beef, and our freezer is always stocked to capacity.  I think there is a lot of negative stigma tied to gun-use and ownership because so many people's minds automatically go to guns for protection or whatever use and completely overlook those of us who use them for food purposes.  I grew up around guns and was taught gun safety from as early as I can remember.  Neither my brother nor I ever viewed guns as some sort of curiousity or thing to show off to our friends.  They were there, but they were just like a kitchen knife or something similar to us.  You used them for a purpose & did not touch them without an adult.  Too many people believe that guns are just plain bad & they carry on these feelings to their children, who of course want to see for themselves what the big fuss is about.  In the proper environment, with the proper discipline & guidence, there is nothing fearful about guns.  Of course, they sell gun safes with LOCKS for a reason.  Any gun owner who has children at home or around their home should know this and invest in one.  Along with gun-safety, they are the safest way to own a gun.

Exactly. I thought she was revisiting old stupid ass drama and I was ready to give her a beat down. If it's been more than a day or two, chances are we don't care. Especially where these two train wrecks are concerned.

WTF EmmaBrooke? Why are you going back and posting on a month old post?

  • Sorry... I was just checking out boards and wanted to reply to something.  Didn't notice the date and didn't realize posts could be "bumped" up.  As far as I knew, posts stayed in the order they were originally posted.  Not meant to be a big deal, sheesh!

Update:  I just realized what I did yesterday.  I had meant to click on "Next" when I was browsing the board, and I accidentally clicked on "Last," thus the reason I didn't realize I was replying to such an old post.  I thought I was only on the second page.  Learned my lesson: Check dates, just in case.  Sorry again!
