Babies on the Brain

Could possibly be pregnant or am I overthinking this?

Hello ladies,

I'm new to the site, but I just wanted to get a few opinions.

My last period started on St. Patricks Day and according to my BC pill pack, I'm not due to start for another week (I'm assuming Wednesday, as it usually tends to be right in the middle of the week) - my cycle is usually pretty regular each month, give or take a day or 2. I had the LEEP procedure done at the beginning of last December to remove mild and moderate dysplasia and went off my BC for a few months and have been back on it for roughly 2 months.

I was sick a few (2) weeks ago and taking Walmart's version of Nyquil to help supress my symptoms enough at night so I could get some sleep. Hubby knew I was taking the syrup in addition to my pill, but he still wanted some loving that weekend, about 4-5 days after I first got sick and was starting to feel better. I was a little surprised at his eagerness and the fact he didn't want to use a condom for extra protection (he was conceived while his mom was taking the pill and cold medicine like nyquil and it counteracted the pill she found out later) - he claimed he doubted I was on the same stuff his mom was. We got busy multiple times that weekend.

I got online that Sunday, just to read up on the Nyquil vs the pill counteracting issue, and got conflicting answers - some sites/forums say it is possible, others say it's just a myth. I also found out that I had been ovulating all that weekend.

Last weekend I started have some annoying gas and my poo has been a bit runny lately. Then yesturday at work, around 2pm, I started getting cramps in my lower abdomen, not as bad as when I get my period, but cramps none the less. I don't usually start having my period symptoms til the weekend before I get my period - not 1-2 weeks before. The cramps lasted all afternoon and into the evening - I took some tylenol before bed, but the cramps are still going on a little bit today - they're not that painful, but I can still feel them. I read that at about 10-14 days into it, the cramps are a common symptom when the egg begins to attach itself to the uterus/fallophian tubes or whatever... it has been almost exactly 10 days since we started doing 'stuff' that one weekend... I also had a tiny spout of nausea yesturday with the cramps, but I can't tell if that's just all in my head or not - I didn't throw up or anything, but you know how you can feel nauseus without actually getting sick - that's how I felt for a short bit.

I mentioned it to my mom last night (without going into the full details, as if I am pregnant, hubby and I would want to tell our parents together in person on the same day), she thinks it could have something to do with the LEEP procedure/surgery I had last December (my doctor said I was healing perfectly though at my last check up and I'm due back for the 6 month one in May). A friend of mine who has a 2 yr old and is TTC another said it's possible I could be pregnant, but isn't sure as I get the runs instead of being constipated. Hubby says that if I've been taking my pill everyday I shouldn't be pregnant.

I'm still about 8-9 days out from getting my period, so it's too soon to take a home test, right? I plan on taking one a couple days after I'm supposed to get my period if I don't get it, but I was just wondering what others though - if it sounds like I am or if I'm just overreacting and overthinking.

Hubby and I aren't actually TTC - financially, we'd like to be a little more stable than we currently are before we start trying and we just started looking at houses, as we're currently in a larger 1 bedroom apt (I'm 24, he's 25, we just got married in September). It wouldn't be the end of the world if I am pregnant - I actually get a little sad each month when I do get my period - but we would have preferred to wait another 6-8 months before trying.

  • WAY too long for me to read.

    1) Did you have unprotected sex?

If the answer is yes then, congratulations, yes you COULD be pregnant.  Take a test and GL.

  • I will be honest. I didn't read all of your post. But PREGNANT or not, you are clearly overthinking this by length of post alone. POAS if you think you are PREGNANT.

And I'm sorry about your poo.

  • holy long post. No one here can tell you if you are pg or not - just wait it out and take a test when you expect your period to arrive if it doesn't. GL.
  • Your post is too long. I didn't read any of it.

If you had unprotected sex, you could be PREGNANT. Or maybe not.

  • LOL, just LOL.

Oh and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much information.

    GL!

Holy hell, that was long.  But thank you for using paragraphs.

I highly doubt you are pg, and I have never heard anything about OTC meds counteracting BCP.  RX antibiotics, yes, Nyquil, not so much.

Oh, and if you were taking your pill correctly, you wouldn't have been ovulating at all.  HTH.

  • I know it's going to be a long 8 or 9 days, but I'd wait until you're officially late.  Either way, best of luck to you!

  • 1. Never EVER say preggers, be a big girl you're either PREGNANT or you're not

    2.  I didn't even read all of this post because if I wanted to read a novel, I have one sitting at home.

    3.  Read TCOYF

    True story.

  • I made it through the first paragraph only. toooooo long.

You could possibly, maybe, probably not be pg, but if your period isn't even late, then why do you think you might be?

  • I actually did read most of your post, and it's very unlikely that you're pregnant. (Btw, don't say preggers. You're not in middle school.) But you're also WAY over analyzing. If you think it's possible, go take a pregnancy test. If you're far enough along to have symptoms, there would be enough hormones in your body to produce a positive test. If it shows up negative, then relax and quit obsessing.
  • Party!!!  Happy Tuesday everybody!

This.  And please don't use the word "preggers".  A small part of my IQ dies everytime I see that word.

  • A few things...

    1.  Don't write long posts

    2. NyQuil does not counteract the Pill

    3.  You don't ovulate if you are on the pill

    4.  Its way to early to test

    and

    5.  Go away.

  • If you're on the pill, I don't know that there really is a time "right when you'd be ovulating." I would wait it out, and I can't tell you if you are pregnant or not, but FWIW- I don't think you're pregnant based on what you've told me.
  • I doubt you are. The easiest way, is to wait until you period is due and if you miss it, take a test.

    Hope you feel better.

  • Antibiotics can affect bc, but I've never heard of Nyquil affecting it.

You would have had to ovulate within the next couple of days to have gotten pregnant, which would still make it too early to take a pregnancy test.  You would be within the frame of time for implantation, though most women don't feel that at all.

The likliest scenario is that you have some intestinal issues.

The only way to know for certain is to take a test, but as you are not even anywhere near your period being late, I rather doubt that you are pregnant.

But you are one of the few that made it all the way through the post!

  • Sorry!

I always tend to write long posts - I can't write a short and simple post to save my life, I'm all about including details I think are important, including backstory since no one on this board knows me. This was actually a short-medium length one, lol...

Since none of you read it (all your answers were in the post) - I said I've been back on the pill for 2 months now (I had LEEP in December and went off it for 3 months after since I couldn't have sex anyway).

I was sick and took Walmart's version of Nyquil for a bit, but DH wanted nookie regardless when I was feeling a little better. Found out I was ovulating then. DH was conceived when his mom was taking the pill with Nyquil type medicine, he knew what I was taking, but didnt bother using a condom. Conflicting things online dont give me a solid answer about if Nyquil can counteract the pill like it did with my MIL back in the early 80s.

I've had minor diarrhea this last week and started cramping like my period with a tiny spell of nausea symptoms, but im not due for another 8-9 days (it's usually pretty regular within a day or 2). Isn't that too early to take a home test? Am I overthinking the whole thing? Or was this still too long for short attention spans?

Feel free to take 2 min and read the original post if you have questions (I hate repeating myself, big pet peeve).

I really don't think nyquil has any affect whatsoever on BCP. You're likely just fine.

  • still too long.
  • I'm going to generously assume that you hadn't read all the posts before replying.

I also write lengthy posts and approve of including details, but you included several superfluous details, such as the circumstances of the conception of your husband.

Other than that, I am giving this a raised eyebrow, and you had better not say that no one was helpful.

  • It's triplets! Congratulations.

    You have 2 options:

    1) Stimulate the economy single-handedly and go purchase truckloads of HPTs.

    2) Wait it out.

If your period isn't due for 8 or 9 days, it's WAAAAY too early. You don't know if you ovulated and if you're actually taking the BCP like you're supposed to (which considering the fact that it sounds like you're hoping for an "oops" I kind of doubt) then you won't be ovulating. In case you didn't know, you must ovulate to conceive. Nyquil has no affect on BCP that any of us are aware of.

  • P.S. I'm afraid I smell office tuna on this one.

  • FWIW I did read your whole post (both of them in fact) and I think that most of the answers you got addressed all of your issues.  Here's a synopsis:

1.) It's is doubtful that Nyquil interacted with your BC.

2.) It is doubtful that you ovulated while on BC.

3.) It is way to early to test.
