Let's talk flat irons again...

Adamsbabble posted about this the other day, but I'd really love input from anyone who has an upper-end hair straightener. I'm sick of my crappy one from Sally Beauty and am looking at getting a nice flat iron. I really love the pink Chi (like others, the pink really sways me :-) but I've heard so many people have problems with them, and they aren't the best rated. I'm also considering a Solia or Sedu (Folica.com has 20% off Sedu right now, I can get it for $90). A few people mentioned Paul Mitchell but I can't find any under my $100 limit so that's ruled out for now.

Does anyone have any of these, or any other flat iron, that they would or wouldn't recommend? Thanks!

  • I love my Chi!!  I have heard of others having issues with them.  My sister did but it didn't stop her from buying another one.  I don't use mine everyday but I've had it for at least five years and I haven't had any problems with it.

  • The problem I hear of people having is not how well they straighten your hair (I have used a CHI on my hair before and can vouch that they do a great job on that part), but that they are shorting out after a couple years.  Considering my $40ish flat iron lasted that long, I would want a $100+ flat iron to last longer, so that bothers me.  And I believe that Rachel said she couldn't get hers repaired/replaced because it was purchased online.  I don't like that since I consider this an investment.  Anyway, I haven't decided on another flat iron yet, but I am likely to go with the Sedu as well since it is on sale and so well rated (and I think it's the one my stylist uses at the salon)--but like other posters, she also did recommend the Paul Mitchell and that has me very tempted to splurge, especially if it's going to last for awhile.  Anyway, I need to make a decision b/c my cheap flat iron isn't heating up very well so I'm thinking it's going to die any day now.  Oh, and Sedu has a pink one as well--I believe that one was more though and if I'm going to spend the extra money it will be on the Paul Mitchell rather than a color.

  • Hmm..I haven't seen the pink Sedu. I agree though, that I don't really want to pay extra just for a color. If you buy from www.folica.com you do get a warranty (how long depends on the brand), I think it's mainly through e-bay and other "unauthorized" dealers that you don't get the warranty. That's a big concern of mine, too, since I don't want to be paying $100 for a flat iron every year or so. My Sally one doesn't work the greatest but it has lasted five years.

ETA - actually I think you're right that you don't get a waranty on any Chi purchased online. I think that will make my decision.

  • DH gave me a Chi 3 years ago for Christmas.  I have used it 3 times a week since and it works fine.  I don't use it every day because it would fry my hair.  I have heard great things about Sedu, and I would choose that if the price is under $100.  My Chi is great...no regrets.

  • I've tried tons of flat irons and the Chi is still my fav. ?I have thick/course hair that is slightly frizzy if I don't iron it so the Chi works the best. ?I've had mine for over a year and love it w/ no problems *knock on wood*
  • I got a paul mitchell from my salon. I am sure I overpaid for it but it is a thing of beauty!! I have coarse curly hair and nothing comes close to it.
  • I have had Chi's & I now have a Sedu. My Sedu is a ton better if I am being honest. I loved my Chi until I bought my new (pink dazzle) one & it shorted out after the first use. I was able to use it a few times after that but I never knew when it would work because of it shorting out. It was a pure PIA! I will never buy a Chi again. The fact that they make a product & know that it shorts out is absolutely ridiculous! Folica is a great place to buy because in addition to the manufacturers warranty they often have an extended warranty. Mine has a 3 year warranty. One year manufacturers warranty & at the time Folica offered a 2 year extended warranty. After buying my Sedu it actually works better & it's been better on my hair. I have thick, wavy hair & it works great! I read tons of reviews on Folica before making my purchase. After what happened with the Chi I did not take my purchase lightly. I mean these things are expensive they should work! This is the flat iron I purchased: https://www.folica.com/Sedu_Ionic_Cera_d1560.html  HTH Let me know if I can help any more :)

  • I have a good friend who manages a wholesale store selling to beauty salons.  They don't even carry the Chi's anymore.  They used to be amazing, but now the new manufacture doesn't make them as well as they used to be made.

I don't know anything about the Sedu's, but I have a GHD and it's amazing!  If you shop around enough, you can probably get it close to $100.

  • The prob with the CHI irons is that they switched manufacturers like the pp mentioned. Most people I know who have purchased their Chi in the last 1-2 years have had issues with it shorting out.

My stylist told me that the original CHI guy/creator whatever is behind the new TIGI Hardcore Smooth Operator design.  I have thick, coarse, curly hair and it works wonders.  I only have to straighten it every 2-3 days.  I love it just as much as I did my CHI and it is under $100.

  • I had a CHI for 3 years and thought it was great.  But then I switched to a Paul Mitchell and I absolutely LOVE it.  If you have thick/curly hair, I highly recommend using a falt iron spray with it.  It makes all the difference in the world.
