I believe it?s similar to BMI for adults it is a way of telling you if your baby is a healthy weight and also if they are growing properly. Babies should stay roughly in the same percentile they were born into and should not go below the 5th or above the 95th percentile or risk major health problems
I think it means that your baby is right in the middle as far a weight/length goes for babies in the country. 50% of the babies the same age are smaller then your baby and 50% are larger.

you posted this...our tech gave us a printout of the measurements and percentile, and looks like we're in for a big baby...she's measuring in the 85-90 percentile.

Re: Percentiles anyone know what they mean?
you are way off.
it's the same as with kids. it's based on average weights/heights. someone in the 50th is average, the lower, the smaller, the higher, the larger.
this.
Ditto this - it is comparing them to other babies at that stage of pregnancy.
You know, if something is said to you during your doctor's appt that you don't understand it is OK TO ASK what they mean!
