Ours is tomorrow morning and I'm so nervous we won't be able to tell! I saw a post down below about how the baby was moving about great and then went to sleep so they couldn't find out. Would it be rude or wrong to request the sex asap (or when they can see it) to prevent that from possibly happening?
Or if baby is totally crossed, are there any "safe" things I could do to change it? (no caffeine, please).
Re: Question about baby cooperation at big u/s
pPROM at 27 weeks, Birdy born at 28 weeks at 2lb 7oz.
i had a snickers bar before just in case....
the first thing our tech asked us was if we wanted to know, and as soon as we had a shot she told us. our baby was also totally cooperative and shoved his butt in the air about 10 seconds into the "show."
I've heard of drinking OJ before, but I've also heard that they can get all bouncy and move too much!
Baby was sleeping so the tech had a hard time getting certain shots, I told her I considered the OJ, but didn't want baby to be toooo hyper...she thanked me and said that it can be difficult to see shots if they're moving around too much.
So I don't really think there is much you can do, other than keep your fingers crossed!

Our baby was not wanting to cooperate at first, but as soon as he did cooperate, the u/s tech told us he was a boy. She was able to get the rest of the shots she needed as well. I honestly think that the tech would tell you the sex as soon as they're able to tell, but don't think it would be rude to ask.
I've read about ladies drinking caffeine or eating/drinking something sugary to get the baby moving. I chose not to do this, because with my luck, it would backfire and the baby wouldn't stop moving! Since our appointment was late in the afternoon, I ate my regular breakfast, had a normal lunch (had a small glass of juice), and everything went well at the u/s.
I'm sure everything will work out just fine
Thanks!
I will double check my instruction sheet tonight and maybe bring a little juice WITH me so that if we need a bit more movement and it's OK'd by the tech and I can drink a bit and see what happens
My mom gave me a tip to get the baby moving the day of my u/s... and it worked better than I could have imagined! I drank a bottle of orange juice and ate some jalepeno flavored potato chips on the way there... worked like a charm! The babe and I love spicy stuff though, so not sure if you do or not...
Only problem... mine was moving so much, that they couldn't get a good view of the heart or his face... so I have to go back in a few weeks to get the measurements.
I honestly wouldn't worry about it. Eat something before you go - and your own nerves might help in keeping baby active. Our girl was asleep but luckily she sleeps with her butt in the air so it was no problems, lol.
A friend of mine said her tech told her to cough a few times... got the baby to wake up.?
At our last u/s the tech told me to drink some OJ when we first come into the office (the u/s is always before the appt). I've also heard the jumping jacks theory..?

Some u/s techs can't tell you the sex right away. They have measurements and things they have to take, and sometimes they have to do those required things before they can do something fun like look to see if it's a boy or a girl.
I brought a diet coke and an OJ to my appointment. I didn't want to have either beforehand (I'd heard that if the baby was too active, you might not be able to see anything either), but I wanted to have them on hand in case the baby wasn't moving enough. I didn't end up needing either one.
I wanted to ask right away but I didn't. From my experience, the tech went with how the baby was positioned. So if he was showing his chest, she did all the heart stuff, etc. When he moved to the butt view, that's when she did the money shot. I'm sure you could ask but I don't know that it would change anything since they kind of go with how the baby is positioned anyway.
I was very worried about baby not cooperating. But I ate breakfast in the morning (which the tech said usually does the trick). I also had a little Sierra Mist (no caffeine) and a few SweetTarts. Baby was moving all over and we found out the sex.
My LO didn't cooperate on his own..he was pretty sleepy, but the tech did lots of stuff to get him moving, like jiggle my belly, poke the side, make me cough, etc, and eventually we got a good look. The first thing they do is get oriented, and then usually they go ahead to see if they can see the sex.
Mine couldn't so she went on measuring other things, and when she was pointing out his heart and we could see all 4 chambers, I started to not care about the sex as much anyway!
The u/s tech will most likely ask you if you want to know not long after you get started.
When our tech first tried to look she was too active and wouldn't sit still long enough to get a clear shot, so she had to try again a little later and got the shot she needed. I didn't drink or eat anything different to what I normally do. I can't imagine how squirmy she would have been if I would have loaded up on juice!

Day Three
I am one of the ones who was unable to find out I tried everything. I drank juice before and during the US. Went to the bathroom mid US to empty my bladder. I did jumping jacks, running in place, touch my toes etc.... The baby would not uncross his/her legs. Plus the umbilical cord was also convienently between. He/she was very active, just didn't want to show us the goods!
So from my experience there is nothing you can do about it. It is what it is, just like being pregnant and having kids you can't control everything.
Good luck!

The one time I drank juice my baby was TOO active and moved so much my doc couldn't get good measurements, so I had to get another. The other times he's been in good position with just enough movement and we've never had trouble seeing anything. I always bring juice with me though just in case they need him to move, but I haven't needed it. So that's what I'd recommend to you, bring something sweet in case you need to wake the baby up. I've heard ice cold drinks help too.
I'd say if you just politely mention you're very eager to know the sex when you first go in and sort of act like a giddy pg lady they'll get the point and you won't seem pushy. I think they like to help you out so they will keep checking for it when the baby moves and there will be many opportunities during the course of the u/s.
Have fun, they are fascinating! Can't wait to hear what you're having!
Seriously? I think you should wait until the tech is done doing everything he/she needs to do before you whip out your cell phone to start texting.
