Pregnant after a Loss

3rd Loss - RE question

Hi All,

I posted a similar post on pregnancy loss but thought you all might have some insights.  The short story, I'm in the process of miscarrying for the 3rd time, which is completely devasting.  I'm going in for an ultrasound on Friday to confirm the miscarriage and my regular OB wants to take blood to see if there's something wrong with me (clotting disorder, etc.)  My question is, at what point do you switch to an RE?  April will be 10 months since we started trying and I don't want to waste any more time.  For those that sought an RE, what do they have to offer over an OB (e.g., types of tests, etc)?  Any insights would be appreciated.

 Thanks!

Re: 3rd Loss - RE question

  • I'm so sorry you're having to go through this.  I never got to the point of needing an RE.  From what my OB told me when I was TTC, they usually won't see you until you've been trying for a year.  But, since you're experiencing your 3rd loss, I think that would warrant a visit to the RE.  I really hope you find answers and get your sticky baby soon.

  • First off, I'm so sorry that you've had to go through this multiple times.

For us, it just took our OB referral.  I'd check with your OB about it, though.  Sometimes insurance is funky about it.  Also, a lot of RE's offices will work with you.  They tend to be use to the "run around" with insurance.

The difference for me with the RE is that he was better versed in different conditions.  The OBs are familiar with the mainstream things like blood clotting, but the RE may catch something bigger.

    GL to you.

  • I'm so sorry for your losses.  I had 3 losses within 9 months and was referred to an RE after that.  My ob did some bloodwork (clotting, chromosomal, etc) after my third loss but told me there was not much more she could do.  The RE did more extensive testing. He also orderd an HSG for me to make sure my uterus and tubes were clear and shaped properly.  Once we could not find anything wrong with me he ordered a bunch of bloodwork on my DH, and that is when we found the cause of the miscarriages.  He has a chromosomal defect.

    Good luck!

  • I am so sorry. ?It is so hard to keep going through this. ?My OB started testing after my second loss (I was 38 at the time, so we didn't wait). ?They did more tests after the third. ?They found antibodies that attacked my thyroid and put me on meds when I was ovulating on (if I remember correctly.) ?They also put me on progesterone, just in case. ?I stayed with them because it seemed like they were running everything and we were trying something new.

After my fourth, I went to the RE. ?They pretty much gave me the same thing, but also found MTHFR so added baby aspirin and high dose folic acid. ? I can't say 100% that made the difference, since I'm on the same protocol with my fifth loss and this one that is going well. ?The nice thing about going to an RE is not seeing pregnant women in the waiting rooms, but I do think they over-medicated and intervened in my case. ?(For example, he prescribed fertility meds even though I had been pregnant 4 times in less than a year and ovulated every cycle.)

Each person has to come to that decision on their own, but I wish you all the best and some answers soon.?

  • Just as an FYI, my RE coded everything for miscarriage and it did not go against any kind of infertility benefits (which often have maxes or aren't covered.) ?My insurance has paid for everything I've gone through in the last couple of years, without a single problem.
  • Thank you everyone!   I felt absolutely lost this morning trying to figure out next steps but will definitely make an appt with an RE after everything I've read on these boards.  I'm so sorry for your losses and am sending all good wishes your way.
