CLICKY POLL: Let's talk "baby talk"...

There's a debate about "baby talk" going on at another site that I post on and I was just wondering what other people think.

I define "baby talk" as made up, nonsense words that have no real meaning or significance for anyone, not even the child at whom they're directed. This means that "baby talk" is not the words that your DC makes up.

On the other hand, there's "motherese," which I define as babbling, cooing, and generally making noises at a child who is not yet capable of actual speech.[Poll]

    I especially hate it because I want her to learn how to talk properly.......not with lisps or anything

    I completely agree. I talk to DD in a different "mommy voice" but I always use the right words. I don't want her to learn baby talk, I want her to learn the actual words. I'm afraid that using baby talk will just delay her speech.

    One of my friends always talks baby talk to DD, and it drives me crazy!  She sounds like Elmer Fudd.

    I can't stand when my MIL talks to DD.  I want to punch her.  But the other day the cat was licking himself and in a dogwhistle pitch MIL said "Oh is the kitty witty taking a batsy watsy?" and before I could vomit my DD said "Cat say Meow."  I burst out laughing and said "yeah, we just use real words with her."  But it drove me batty even when she was an infant.

    Yea, I really can't stand when my MIL talks to my son; nothing makes sense.  Even my son looks at her like she is strange.
