Parenting after a Loss

has anyone used craigslist to find a babysitter?

if so, any suggestions on how to go about it?

Re: has anyone used craigslist to find a babysitter?

  • craigslist to find babysitters out here (az) has been nothing but bad news.  for awhile we had stories on the news a couple times a week about babysitters wrong-doings and they were all found on craigslist.  not trying to scare you but it's definitely something i would not do unless they had good, valid references.

  • Honestly I would be nervous about finding a babysitter on craigslist too....a used stroller, sure..a babysitter....not so much.   Do you have any friends or relatives with kids that might have names they could share with you?  What about a local moms group?  I found several on meetup.com and got babysitter names from there.

I've also heard about babysitting services that screen their babysitters, so maybe google that??

  • i would call local daycares or ask your pedi for referrals. Or post on your local board about how they found babysitters. Maybe post something at the local college. ?
    ?
I wouldn't hire a sitter from craigslist. There are some very shady characters on there. ?
  • I think it's no better or worse than any other source, as long as you check references and avoid unlicensed home centers and shady characters.

I found a great college student on Craigslist, but then when we tried to hire her, she took a full-time job with another family and pulled out (I could have cried).

Now we found a really nice looking licensed home daycare on Craigslist (we checked their state licence and everything), and are interviewing them tonight.  Will let you know how it turns out.

  • Seems I'm the minority, but yes, technically, we did, and she was the BEST thing that could have happened.

I wouldn't necessarily worry about the credentials they may list in their CL post.  You HAVE to interview them anyway, at their home.  You can ask all your questions then, get a feel for them in person.  I'd suggest doing your interview during a "normal business day" (for her) so you can see her in action with any kids she may already have/watch, and then you are also there to watch her interact with Hadley.

Your gut will tell you whether a person is worth considering seriously, or if you're barking up the wrong tree, so to speak.

  • May-you live in Boston right? Do you live near any of the universities? My cousin went to BU and was hired as a nanny..That is how she paid her way through school...I believe she found the job through a posting at the school! its worth looking into especially for education majors..GL!
  • I've had a few jobs from www.sittercity.com, sitters.com, and care.com. It is MUCH safer than Craigslist. The all have a background check option too.

Too bad I live far away. :) I'd apply to your posting!!!

  • thanks for all the suggestions/feedback.
