Did your insurance cover pump?

BCBS of MA will cover it (electric one) if:

1. Baby born premature or

2. Not latching on

I had mentioned this to my Dr who said will take care of it for me.

If yours was covered which one will they/did they cover...

**my sil said she got a Medela but she did have a problem w/ latching.**

Re: Did your insurance cover pump?

  • would ONLY cover the cost of a rental IF/while baby was in a NICU which wasn't the case for us.

  • I also have BCBS (but the Federal employee version) and it will only cover the cost of a rental if one of the two reasons you listed apply. I can't buy one and have them cover it.
  • My insurance didn't cover one.  From other posts I have read, when insurance covers it, you still have an issue with finding a medical supply company who sells them.  You can't just go to Target and buy one from what I have heard.  And secondly, if you don't have latch issues, it is terribly unethical for you to get a Rx for one so you don't have to pay out of pocket.
  • I have BCBS of FL and it would cover the rental of an electric and the cost of a manual.
  • my BCBS of IL covered the manual Medela that the LC gave me in the hospital.  i never asked what the terms were, i was just happy to see it got covered!!!
  • I have Oxford and was told they only cover if baby is in NICU.

  • I called my insurance the other week and asked about pumps (a co-worker of mine is also pregnant)  My insurance covers an electric pump, I just needed my dr. to write an Rx.  I couldn't go out and buy a pump and turn the bill into them though, they only cover what they issue, which happens to be the Ameda purely yours.
  • personal choice reimburses $50.00 of any pump just send reciept and $100. for at home lactation consult
  • UHC or the version I had (which was supposidly the best) will NOT cover the cost of a pump...and my babies were 30 weekers and had latching issues. Oh well, I sucked it up and bought one on my own...while they were in the NICU and I was there I could use one there..which did help est. my supply!  In my opinion, the price of a pump IS worth it.
  • I have bcbs of MA and they covered my pump.  I had my ds pedi write a prescription for failure to latch and called Cambride Medical Suppy.  I faxed the prescription and they sent the pump overnight to me.  I received it the next day.  They covered them all.  Cambride will tell you which ones you can choose from.  They were even offering the freestyle.

I did have problems with latching but my lactation consultant told me that any good pedi or ob will write the prescription regardless.  Just make sure they write Failure to Latch directly on the prescription.

I am sorry, but I don't see how a Dr lying to the insurance company would be part of being "any good Dr".

  • I have CIGNA and they reimbursed me up to $300 for the purchase of a pump. I bought my pump off of Amazon and was able to get fully reimbursed. Woo-Hoo!!
  • we just sumbitted the receipt under flexible spending & got it reimbursed.
