2nd Trimester

Do you drink McDonalds sweet tea?

I just got in trouble over on 1st tri because I had a large sweet tea today.  The last time I had one was at like 7 weeks and have maybe had 5 caffinated drinks this whole time, but apparently it's still bad. Tongue Tied

Re: Do you drink McDonalds sweet tea?

  • You got in trouble? WTH? That's nonsense.

I've never had McD's sweet tea but their commercials make me want to try it!

Someone posted a website about the rate of m/c and caffeine.  She said it's best to cut it all out.

  • We don't have sweet tea at McDonalds here...maybe it's a regional thing. But I do drink a half a cup of coffee every single morning and I'm fine.
  • I don't drink McDonalds sweet tea, but I do drink caffeine (one drink a day for headaches on my Dr.'s orders, no less).  While some women choose to give it up completely, some don't.  It's about moderation.  I hope the tea was tasty - and you treat yourself to another at some point.
  • ignore their idiocy...one sweet tea here and there is fine.

  • I have tried it before and it was way too sweet for me, but as for the caffine part you are fine!

  • Yes. I have a large one every morning.  About 2 weeks ago I received a link in my weekly pregnancy email that had a link to the Mayo Clinic's website on caffeine in common beverages/foods.  Looking at the sweet tea, I figured for a 32 oz, there was a little less than 25% of the daily caffeine limit, so I've had one every day since then.

Enjoy your sweet tea! Big Smile

  • Haven't had their sweet tea, but I eat everything else on the menu. Seems like my baby is a fast food junkie.

  • I don't b/c I am choosing to avoid caffeine b/c we don't know the exact safe amount.  Usually tea has more caffeine than coffee.  But most people go by the 300 mg rule, in which case I'm sure it's fine. It's really a personal choice.
  • Nope... but its because I don't like it, not because of the caffeine.  I had a 20 oz Mtn. Dew at school the other day... I was HYPED UP.  It had been AGES since I'd had that much caffeine.  My mentor was like... "You're not suppsed to have that..."  And I said... "I never have caffeine and I woke up 5 times between 11 and 4 am with my dogs... I'm drinking a REAL drink."

  • I gave up caffeine completely first tri because I am paranoid... But, realistically, it is ok to have a little. Just don't drink the 42oz one and you'll be fine :)

It seems like there are a lot of newer studies and articles saying that caffeine, esp in 1st tri, raises the risk of miscarriage.  I'm not Dr., but that was enough for me to feel like I didn't need to risk it.

I understand where you are coming from.  That's the reason I hardly have any.  I just thought it was crazy I said sweet tea and they threw out a website about m/c and caffeine like I was drinking  5 sweet teas a day.

  • I've read and responded to the 1st tri post. I really believe a small amount is fine! Basically, for me the studies have to turn into most of our drs saying, "warning! no caffeine!" as opposed to "have a little. 300 mg, etc" Doesn't affect me either way since I don't drink soda or coffee but I'd be a lot more concerned if my dr said I couldn't have any and then came here and everyone else said their doc said the same thing.

Here is the link to the Mayo Clinic site that has caffeine info:

  • People give me looks all the time when I have a can of coke... apparently they';re not paying ENOUGH attention to notice that it says "caffeine FREE".  I also use decaf for my sweet tea at home when I have the good ole southern girl craving.

  • Pay no mind to them Amy. That's a lot of pregnancy paranoia talking over in 1st tri. You can do everything right and still have complications. Enjoy your caffeine!

  • The 300mg rule is a good one... I haven't cut out caffeine at all. I get migraines horribly, and the doctor said they would rather me drinking my normal amount of caffeine than having horrible migraines. My BP goes through the roof when I get a migraine, lesser of two evils I guess. I think 300mg is something like... 6 sodas a day. You're fine.

But I had sushi today, you may not want to take my advice! Oh... and I had lunch meat. Eeek!

  • I am just glad I am in the 2nd tri now (according to the Dr)/less than a week away (according to the bump).  I cannot take the crazy no caffeine, no lunchmeat, no anything else good people over on 1st tri!

  • I had a large mcdonalds unsweetened tea this morning!  I figure even if I get some caffeine, at least I am getting plenty of fluids from it!

  • Yes I have had McD sweet tea with my first pg  and although I have not had any sweet tea with pg I have had a lot of starbuck. I just try to keep my caffeine intake under 300 mg. And if you only knew how much caffeine I was drinking after my DS was born it is a wonder how I became pg agian just two and a half mos later, if the studies are correct about caffeine.
  • I don't drink it but I know girls who have like 2 or 3 cups of coffee while pregnant, so I doubt 1 tea is super bad. I have 1 cup of black tea at work each morning, I would drink decalf but the cafe doesn't have any. Beyond that I have 0?caffeine. I think it's best to avoid it but ya know it' snot the end of the world.
  • ahhhh now i know what i'm having for breakfast in the morning, a big ol cup of mc.d's tea and a yummy greasy biscuit haha. tell her to suck it, a little caffiene here and there is just fine
  • Not since getting pregnant, but I've had them in the past. I'd be more concerned about the ton of sugar in them than the caffeine to be honest. I can barely drink a small, I can't imagine the calories and sugar content in a large.?
