Pregnancy/Baby Book Recs?

1. Pregnancy - old one is in storage and I didn't really need it up till now b/c I was pretty much "been there, done that" up through 2nd trimester. Now that I'm approaching third tri though, I'm thinking I should have one around for quick reference and it's too much trouble for DH to get the old one easily so I'd like to buy a new one. Any recs? The old one I liked was the Mayo Clinic Guide and I strongly prefer very clinical, medical, facts only type of books. And for what it's worth, I checked out WTEWYE and couldn't stand it.

2. Baby Books? It just occurred to me that I have no idea what to do with a baby, and since we've been avoiding all things baby I never even considered getting a book but I keep seeing other pregnant women mention reading childcare/baby books. It still scares me to do this but I'm thinking maybe I should read something before I am responsible for human life? Any recommendations here? I'm sure there are a lot of different books with different ideologies, so for an idea of where we might fit into various controversial topics, we: plan on doing vaccines on schedule, plan on breastfeeding to the extent I can, don't want to let baby cry it out, don't plan on co-sleeping.

Thanks in advance!

  • I think your pregnancy week by week is interesting. Other than that I'm not sure, let us know what you find!
  • I would read the basic 'how to care for a newborn' baby books...this helped with some of the more general questions.  As far as advice or tips I would honestly ask the girls on the nest or on different boards.  Some good advice that i read overall is to make sure you are putting your baby in for a nap for every 2 hours he is awake--especially in the first 3 months--keep in mind when i say 'putting baby in for a nap', I mean, holding him to sleep, going for a car ride/walk--whatever works because new babies often do not sleep in their own bed.

Everything else I would wait on--so many things you do will come naturally and you will likely do things you never said you would do!!.  In otherwrods, if you have a fussy baby, then google possible tummy issues like colic or buy a book like 'your fussy baby' (which I have--its all reated to sleep though).  If you have a baby that doesnt like to BF then buy a BFing book or see a lactation consultant etc.

  • I received just about every baby and pregnancy book as cast offs.

The only pregnancy one I like is the Mayo Clinic guide.

For parenting, I like the Parents (as in magazine) Best Advice I Ever Received book.  Full of great tips, but not medical advice.  Medical advice I get from my pedi.

  • For overall baby care, I really like  baby 411 , quick points, and no need to read it all, you can look up specifics. I also really liked the The Happiest Baby on the Block for newborn calming techniques and I REALLY love The Baby Whisperer for helping us get Ethan into such a great routine, especially with sleep. For Dads, if he is at all techie, he would love The Baby Owners Manual.

  • I was given WTYEWYE, but I wouldn't buy it.  I had pregnancy week by week.

I was given a how to care for child 0-5, not sure of the exact name - not mayo clinic.  Hospital gave us a very similar book to this and honestly I haven't had time to look at either.  books says 'american academy of pediatrics'

  • I like Your Pregnancy Week By Week.  For baby books I like the Dr. Sears Baby Book and What to Expect the First Year.  I also like Happiest Baby on the Block.
  • I pretty much 2nd Skoor's recs. I'm a nurse, so I (like to think) I know how to care for a baby, and what I didn't really know, I would ask on the month boards. I liked getting 26 people's opinions on what to do if she has a booger in her nose. ;-P   but Baby411 did a nice job to quik ref things.

My sage advice  - babies are not as hard as one would think. For millions of years, moms in the jungles of Borneo have been getting by just fine without $3400 in gear, BPA-free washclothes, and onesies. You do what you can, and know you're a great mom for trying. A couple things stick out for me, that I never read in a book: 1) the week after baby comes home, it gets VERY lonely. Life goes back to normal, and all the baby does is eat, sleep and poop. I never knew how lonely that time was going to be. The obsession with how *I* was doing ended, DH went back to work... just be aware of that.   Someone also said "don't start doing something you don't want to be doing in 6 months..." so don't start something you are not willing to make a habit. As much as Ava was cute and snuggly, I didn't want her in my bed/room. So we did everything possible to avoid that. To each their own, obviously. But that's what I gotta say about having babies.

    ;-)

ps - i LOVE LOVE LOVE that you're verbalizing differently now. So lovely. You are going to be a great mom!

  • I love Baby 411 because it covers just about everything you need to know and can be used as a good reference guide.

I read one that is about raising Baby from birth until 5 years and there were three doctors who wrote it, but I can't remember the specifics.  It was helpful.

There is a book called 100 things every parent should know...or something like that.  It touches on 100 topics and then gives you references if you want to look into the subject further like swaddling, and signing.

I have Your Pregnancy Week by Week but the coolest part about it for me is that you get to see an "acutal size" picture of baby in the 1st trimester and then the weight and length...but really that could be looked up online.

    Happy reading!

  • "The Baby Book" by Dr. Sears is good to have around.  Plenty of answers for all of your questions and it's like 800 pages.
