I had a c/s with DS due to HELLP syndrome developing at around 35 weeks. I really really really don't want another c/s, but I know a lot of OB's don't want to do VBACs when the pregnancies are so close together (they'll be 13 months apart).
My first appt with my OB is in about 2.5 weeks and I'm hopeful that he'll be ok with it, but I'm like jumping out of my skin with nervousness until then! Has anyone here attempted a VBAC? Any tips for me?
Re: Anyone here know anything about VBACs?
I haven't had a VBAC but I am a Labor & Delivery RN. I agree with the PP about finding a supportive Dr. There are MD's that I work with that just flat out tell their patients they don't "do" VBAC's. There are only few like that. Most will work with you if that is your wish.
The problem I think you are going to have is how close your babies are together. Most Dr's tell you that you must wait until your baby is 12 months before you get pregnant again if you want a VBAC. The risk of uterine rupture is too high. My Dr. told me I had to wait 6 months before I got pregnant again. That is the lowest number I have ever heard. So, I am afraid that you won't be able to find a doc to let you. I am still undecided if I am going to try for a VBAC or just have a repeat c/s just because of the risk with my babies being close together (even though my MD says its ok)...ykim? I'm going to discuss it more with my Doctor. Good Luck!
Thanks everyone
I wish I could just have my appt and ask my doctor already! After I had DS I know that he told me that a) I didn't need to wait any amount of time to get pregnant again and that b) he would be okay with me attempting a VBAC. I just didn't think to combine the two scenarios and ask him about that
I'm hopeful that since he didn't say anything about it in the hospital, even though he knew I wanted to get pregnant relatively soon and also that I wanted a VBAC that he'll be open to it. I don't want to do anything unsafe, but at the same time several repeated c/s carry their own risks and I plan on having several more children after this one. We'll see I guess, ahhh patience is not my forte!!
I haven't had one...but am planning for one any.day.now (hear that, baby? come out!!)
I have a supportive OB but my biggest worry is the rest of the hospital staff and on call Dr.'s being supportive. Our hospital has a good track record for VBAC's but still...
I'm currently reading Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and it's very inspirational.
YAY! This was what I was going to reply with! Read this book. It is VERY inspirational. You also might want to go to the Farm's website, just google it, I'm not sure what it is.
Ina May is a HUGE VBAC supporter/advocate. If it were me, I would go to their website, read some, and probably contact the Farm midwives for advice.
I've got nothing personally to offer as I've never had a C/S, but I know how frustrating it can be for women, I've had so many friends go through this. I just wanted you to know that I think its awesome you want to do it, and you should arm yourself with as much info as you can!
And read POSITIVE stories and helpful stuff. I think that is very important.
Awesome, I'm putting the Ina May on book on hold at the library as we speak
edit: scratch that. Like I said, I'm not very patient. I already went and bought the book and I really like it! I read the chapter on VBACs while I was still at the store and it was very encouraging. Thanks again for the rec!
