We went for our advanced ultrasound yesterday and the baby looked perfect as far as everyone could tell! Yay!!! With Tri 18, the Dr. said they can almost always see some sort of abnormality/deformity, and since they didn't they now gave us a 90% chance of having a perfectly healthy baby boy! We're so relieved and thankful, considering this could have turned out much differently for us. Obviously, there is still a small chance that the baby does have Tri 18, but since we opted not to do the amnio, we won't know for sure until he is born. For now, though, we're definitely ok with the 90% chance that he will be healthy.
On a side note, after we told the dr. we didn't want the amnio, she told us that it really is a big decision...they had a lady in there just last week that had the amnio and 2 days later all of her fluid leaked out and the baby didn't survive. And, the amnio ended up coming back perfectly normal....could you imagine? Don't mean to scare anyone...just thought I'd share....
Re: F/U: Tested positive for Trisomy 18 (abnormal AFP screen)
good news!
eeck, that's horrible about that lady and her baby.
( we opted out of having the amnio done as well based on the fact that our u/s's looked perfectly fine and no markers for downs.
I am so glad you guys got good news on your U/S! What a scary thing to have to go through. While there is always some possibility of something being wrong, even with a negative AFP screen, it's got to be so hard when you know there could be a pretty good chance of Tri 18.
So glad your follow up went well!
Very scary about the lady with the amnio- now I am nervous as I am getting one in a few weeks...I know that wasn't your intention so no worries
great news!!!
I would never get an amnio...no matter what any other test said...its not like you can really fix anything if there is something wrong and I would never terminate, so i say, why risk it???

Great update! Glad everything looks good!
Scary about the amnio.

That is great news!
How scary and sad about that woman and her experience with amnio.
I'm very glad the US didn't show anything!!!! AS I mentioned in your previous post we did opt for the amnio. I stayed on bed rest just like they told me and did nothing except watch TV and pee, DH fixed all of my food too. It was actually great as far as that goes. I also prayed like crazy that nothing would happen to the baby. It would be horrible for the screen to come back clean and lose the baby, I can't imagine what that must have been like for her.
Again, very happy for you!!!!!
Im glad your u/s came back fine.
Hearing stories like this make me so glad I decided not to do any of the testing for downs and trisomy.
That is sooo sad about the lady with the amnio. I would never do amnio , the risk is way to high. I read 1 in 200 babies dont end up making it after amnio. So not worth the risk in my opinion. Id rather just accept my baby as he is!
Wonderful News!!! :-)
I don't recall your numbers -- we had a 1 in 8 chance for T18 from our screen and our u/s showed that everything was perfect so far too so we also opted to NOT get the amnio.
Your email just made me jump from 95% to 100% confident with my decision.
Good luck to both of us!!!
We had two soft markers for Down's show up at my 20 week, I was told that it was just about a 3-4% chance for Down's, but I elected to do the amnio anyway. I get results back this week.
I'm a worrier and am very glad I went ahead with the amnio. My Dr said that chances of a miscarriage aren't higher whether you do the amnio or not, they can happen either way. I decided that I'd rather worry for 7-10 days than 5 months.
Our numbers were 1:13 for T18. So glad our u/s's came back looking good for both of us...with risk ratios that high, I would venture to say we're blessed
