Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

my 1 year old has suddenly stopped sleeping thru the night

Anyone find a magical treatment that can get the DC to get back on track. My DS had a stomach virus about 3 weeks ago and has not slept thru the night since. He is hungry - and takes about 6 oz of milk when he wakes up... he eats dinner at approx 6 pm. Has a bottle (he was born 3 mos early so still on the bottle at a year) around 7-7:30 then goes to bed great -- been waking up between 1:30-3 each night. I have tried to let him CIO, 30 minutes and he is still up... anything I can do or just wait this out????? TIA!

Re: my 1 year old has suddenly stopped sleeping thru the night

  • It is probably just a phase.  There is a 13 month sleep regression and a lot of kids get their 1 year molars right after their birthday.  Sleep was difficult for us from 12.5-13.5 months.  DD went back to sleeping well when the disturbance passed.

  • Sarah's going through the same thing and it just started within the last week.  I think she's teething (she does this thing where she constantly rubs her tongue over her gums when she's teething) so I gave her some Tylenol then put her back in her crib.  I follow the Ferber method and she finally fell back to sleep after about 45 minutes each night.  Probably about as long as it took for the Tylenol to kick in.  I finally got smart and gave her tylenol before bedtime last night and she actually slept through the night!

  • I'm right there with you!  Darby has been waking up between 4:00 am and 5:00 am every morning.  He doesn't want to be awake - he just wants to snuggle and try to fall back asleep.  At first I thought he was waking up hungry - but after 10 days straight of it he got 2 more teeth.  He was STTN again for about a week and then it started again.  We Ferberized him at 10 months and he was the BEST sleeper after that.  Darn teeth!!!
  • DS seemed to regress after being sick around 12 months, after being a very good sleeper since around 5 months when we ferberized him.  We retrained him after a couple weeks of not sleeping well, and he was back on track after a night or two, it just took effort on our part. he is doing great again.  gl--it's so hard when they go through phases like this!
