Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Not to stir the pot further (promise!) but I did NOT get my questions answered yesterday.

What is Diaper Dust?  How exactly do you make it?

Anything that could make the diaperpail smell less like the 7th ring of hell is worth looking into.

  • I have two Diaper Genies and sensitive smell and I don't smell anything.  I am using disposables so I am not sure if this DD is just for cloth?
  • Loading the player...
  • I want to know too!
  • There are a couple different ways of making it.

Easiest? Open a box of baking soda. Sprinkle on diapers. Repeat.

My favorite: Mix baking soda with lemon zest. I've also used cinnamon, which actually covers the smell better because it is stronger, but is a little overpowering in Joseph's room, which is kind of small.

You can also toss it with essential oils, soap flakes, boric acid (haven't done that one, myself), etc. The baking soda is what absorbs the odors. Whatever else you add is for stabilizing/extending (soap flakes) or scent. Not really sure what the boric acid is supposed to bring to the party, part of the reason I haven't used it.

Want to know what I've used that worked crazy well? Cedar flake kitty litter. I'm just both too cheap and too lazy to use it regularly.

  • And we don't CD. I have a regular diaper pail. But I also add it to top off the diaper pail bags when I tie them up to keep the garbage outside from getting too gross before it's picked up. I've had no problems.
  • Am I the only one who just doesn't use a diaper pail? Pee-pee diapers go straight in the trash, poopy ones get wrapped up in a plastic grocery bag and tied tight, then straight in the trash. No smell issues...
  • for cloth diapers:

baking soda, essential oil, and borax.

We do the same thing if we're downstairs. Diaper pail is just for Joseph's room.

  • I CD and I wash the dipes out right away, then keep them in a wetbag in the bathroom.

I wash them everynight, so I don't have to deal w/ a pail wet or dry.

  • Hmm conflicting info on here...is it BorAX or BorIC acid? Borax is for laundry, Boric Acid is what we use to kill ants. Help?

Since we started solids, this is my routine too. No more need for a pail freshener.

Which is largely why I haven't used it. I found several conflicting recipes. However, I've found it's not really necessary. Baking soda and a scent is all you really need.

  • We don't use a pail (take diapers straight outside) and I still smell poo when I go in Ian's room. ?I don't know if it's just my imagination or what but it's freaking me out.

Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, let it sit for 15 minutes and then vacuum it.  It will help a lot and will freshen the room.  :)

borax.  it's for the laundry & helps pretreat the CDs.

    i also know 100%

don't ask how i know though.

  • We don't CD either & DD's room is stinky. lol

I've tried everything & nothing has worked. I'm getting some BS & oils this weekend to try this out. We need something to get rid of that stink.

  • Wait, so I have the Diaper Champ.  Do I put this mixture in the bottom of a new trash bag when I "install" it in the Champ?  Or do I put it in the bottom of the Champ itself, under where the bag lies?

  • Vanilla - I just sift a little over ever diaper or two.

Brandons- Yeah, that's gonna work. So...how do you know???

And Meg- VERY LITTLE oil. That's actually why I went to using cinnamon or lemon zest. I was getting mine too clumpy.

  • In the actual poopy diaper before you fold it up and put it in the Champ?

Hmm. Hadn't thought of that. That could be effective. But no, I just throw the diapers in there, sprinkle on some of my lemony goodness, and that's it.

  • People pay $10 for that stuff?
