Re: XP: dairy free moms- 2 questions!

  • He was less fussy within a couple of days.  The gassiness decreased soon after.  It took weeks for his congestion and rash to clear up.  We're still seeing mucous-y poop but that could be b/c it's only been 2 weeks since I stopped the final 2 soy products that were in my diet.  I've been dairy free for a month and it's gotten easier although I still miss a lot of foods.

My meals are dairy and soy free so the following may be even more limited than you need.

    Breakfast:
Life cereal,  Honey Nut Cheerios, or Shredded Wheat cereal with Rice milk.  I found that rice milk isn't as bad as soy.  Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal.  Fruit.  Decaf tea or decaf coffee with rice milk.

    Lunch:
-Shredded chicken with lettuce and dijon mustard on a Lender's frozel bagel (the only bread/bagel w/o soy).  Sun Chips or Lay's potato chips.
    -Fried egg on a bagel
    -salad with oil and vinegar
    -Campbell's Tomato soup
-Or I have leftovers from the previous night's dinner.

    Dinner:
-tacos with corn shells (only one kind is soy free).  Ortega taco seasoning is dairy and soy free.
-Mamwhich is dairy and soy free
-turkey burgers w/o cheese and sweet potato fries
    -chicken, rice, and veggies
-homemade chicken soup (easy recipe on this site:  https://www.nursingmomrecipes.com/chickensoup.html)

  • Thanks! Do you also avoid foods without dairy that say they "were manufactured in a plant that produces milk products"?

  • I was dairy and soy free for 6 months because the G.I. specialist told me my DS would be better the longer and stricter I was on the diet.  I never cheated and thought I was doing the best thing to prevent a dairy/soy allergy in the future.  He ended up with a vitamin D deficiency and had muscle weakness, low tone, and ligament laxity.  The Dr. didn't notice something was wrong until 12 months.  I was the one who figured it out before the doctors did and started giving him Vit D and calcium after we got the bloodwork back.  He is now finally starting to stand with assistance and he is 16 1/2 months.  My advice to you is to certainly do the diet but make sure you take your prenatal and start your baby on a multivitamin at 6 months when the vit. D stores are depleated from the womb.  Also, you should take a calcium supplement with magnesium and some cod liver oil in the winter months.  You don't have to take my advice but please research what I've said and be careful.  In the U.S.A. the doctors don't know much about breastfeeding like they do in other countries because we've been pushing formula for so long.  Your milk is your babies nutrition so you have to eat well.  Don't believe that BS about the baby will get what it needs from you because it just isn't true.  The La Leche League is big into "Quality of mothers diet equals quality breastmilk".  Just trying to help because I wish somebody had warned me.  good luck.
  • Oh sorry, I never answered your question.  It took one week for the mucus and green stools to go away.
  • Not dairy free any more but when I was I ate a lot of Hummos and nuts (almonds, cashews - also helped with supply, peanuts, etc.).  I also found that almond milk was even better than the rice and soy milk (almond breeze vanilla unsweetened - still use it today).  I also found that the store brand (Kroger here) of bread did not have milk.  I ate a lot of soup once I found which kinds did not have dairy and applesauce.  Hard boiled eggs were good when I was home alone with the baby during the day.  I also ate popsicles.  Oreos also do not have dairy (strange I know) so I ate a lot of Oreos!  I also ate more "candy" like hot tamales, jelly beans, etc.  Triscuits and wheat thins were dairy free.  I also had good luck with the soy sour cream and soy cream cheese as far as mixing it in with things.  I didn't eat them plain.  I also ate a lot of fruits & veggies.  There were a few Lean Cuisines that I found that didn't have milk.  I also ate salsa mixed with avacados with tortilla chips.  Also, black beans, salsa on flour tortillas (was able to find some without milk).  I know that it is a hard thing to do so good luck.  For me, I am about 40 pounds under my pre pregnancy weight so while it was tough that was a nice benefit.
