Can we talk about the tutus?

I know it's old news, but I got in on it late, and I didn't see everything.  From what I saw (of the pics someone "rescued" with the cupcake) there wasn't anything suggestive or sexual about the pics.  I'm sorry, I just didn't see it.I also didn't see all the comments that led to the PM frenzy, but it sounded like people said some really nasty stuff.

Saying someone's kid looks "slutty" or "is dressed like a slut" (as opposed to calling her one--cause that's sooo different) sounds pretty off-the-wall to me.  I dunno.  If I found out people were on some message board posting pics of my baby and saying I was pimpin' my kid, I couldn't guarantee the "sanity" of my response.

  • Your daughter is so cute.

I thought some of the outfits were gorgeous. I do think corsets are a little much for young girls, but I'm one of those mom's who won't put DD in a bikini. I did see how *some* of the pictures could be taken the wrong way, but then, maybe that's because they were presented to me like that and I was looking. I didn't have a strong enough opinion to get involved in the original drama.

PS...the story you told yesterday about victim racial profiling broke my heart.

Wish I had it. I can't even find the old posts about the OP.  My search function is busted today.

Thank you, and that story really got to me.  I cannot imagine...

  • I went back a couple of pages tried to find it. I don't know the story here, but from your post, it sounds absurd.

Well, I can sum it up, but I'm kind of in the same boat as you b/c all I saw was the fallout.  Basically someone on here ran across an etsy seller who made tutus for little girls.  Some of them were "princess dresses" and had little corset backing and were sleeveless (as ball gowns tend to be these days) modeled by her daughter.

The child is a really striking little girl with really dark hair and these huge bright blue eyes.  For some reason, in a pic I didn't see, people said the mom had put make up on her.  In another she is holding a cupcake and in one she is eating the cupcake with frosting on her mouth.  Apparently people started posting that these and other pics were inapproriate and bandying about the words "slut" and "slutty."

The etsy seller went nuts (justifiable rage IMO) and signed up for an acct. on here (and on Cafe Mom) to defend herself but had to wait for the waiting period to post.  So instead she flamed all these folk on PM and they posted what she said to them.  Apparently she flamed people who said nice and supportive things too, but that could have been the rage talking.

  • Huh. Yeah, I'd have to agree with you that I don't think I'd react well if someone referred to my DD as "slutty" or even dressed "slutty."

She's adorable, btw.  Love the outfit!

  • I saw some of the pictures & really didn't see an issue.  I saw a little girl in a tutu eating a cupcake - messy on her mouth - the way kids tend to do it - nothing provocative or slutty.  Maybe I didn't see all the pics?

I think there were some nutcracker pics, not sure what the issue was there. Make-up, I think?  The corset backing did expose some skin, but my first thought would not be "revealing" it would be "put a shirt on under it" so she won't be cold.
  • huh...while I get it that everyone wants their kid to look cute, I thought that the little girl looked very adult in those pictures.  Our society places a lot of value on a woman's looks, and those kinds of pictures of girls not only perpetuate that value, but expand it to include children.  Little kids should be playing, not getting their hair and make-up done and pictures taken of them by mommy.

  • i agree with you guys.  i remember scanning through the OP, rolling my eyes at "the pearl clutching" (gotta love lanie), and backing out of the post.

there are "parents" out there letting their children die, and everyone over here is freking out about a girl in a princess tutu eating a cupcake?  Confused
