Is there really a nickname for Linda?

I was talking with a vendor today and she asked me to fax her something. Said to fax it to Lin. I figured it was spelled Lynn, so I asked to make sure. Nope, it was spelled Lin (and she said it was short for Linda). I had never heard of that before. What is the sense of shortening a name just to get rid of two letters?

Re: Is there really a nickname for Linda?

  • How about the nickname for John being Jack?!  you aren't even shortening it at that point!  ;)

  • I've heard of it.  My name is Mary and ppl call me Mar (pronounced Mare) and others call me May
  • My mom's name is Linda and my dad calls her Lin...

  • Well my FIL is David and is called Dave. Same thing, just dropping 2 letters. Lots of Jodies are Jo too.

    fAustralians shorten all names though.

Add an o or a y or azza and you have a nn.

Did you know Sharons in Australia are called Shazza? Barrys are call Bazza? And Darrens are called Dazza? Did you meet any Shazzas? LOL

Classic Aussie commentary at HS rowing was "And Davo has pulled ahead of Chazza with Andy and Robs following up. Dazza and Bluey (the redhead) are bringing up the rear".

I don't think Linda needs shortening, but I'm not surprised at a nn.

  • btw remember some nn are actually LONGER. Like Maura's diminiuitive or nn is Maureen. Sometimes it is about it sounding endeared, not shorter.
  • I'm guilty  - my sister is Erin and I sometimes shorten that to "EH"  She hates it LOL
  • My MIL's name is Joanne and her husband calls her Joanna!  :)

My friends call me Jo or Jod (Jode) --- I love it.  It is definitely an endearing thing --- and I've had some people on here call me Jo or Jod and makes me all warm and fuzzy!  :)

  • I know a Linda that goes by "Lin," but didn't know it's an official nickname. However, I guess anything's possible. My mother's name is Mary and everyone in our family calls her "Mar." DD actually calls her Mar-Mar.

  • My name is Evelyn and all my friends and family call me Evvy(Eh-vee) or Ev. Our daughter is Emily and we frequently call her Milly in addition to Emmie. Nicknames are just as much about turning the name into something endearing as they are about shortening the name! Oh, and when I was 6, my brother was teasing me, calling me Ev-Uuuuuh-Lyn and I told him, Evelyn is no longer my name. My new name is just Lyn. 20 years later, he STILL calls me Lyn or Lyn-Duhhhh to tease me;)

That's me.  Most of my good friends call me Lin.  It's not so much about SHORTER as it is about FAMILIAR, and just a pet name.
