We have been doing Ferber for exactly a week. ?The first 2 days were great, day 3 was a nightmare. ?It is so tough but I kept telling myself that my son's sleep sucked and that I was committed to Ferberizing and did not want to confuse him by quitting Ferber once we decided to start. ?I was also a horrible sleeper as a child and my mom never sleep trained me and I STILL am a horrible sleeper. ?I'm not sure if that's the real cause of my sleep problems or if Ferber might have helped me but I kept telling myself that to keep me going. ?
The past few days have been great for us, sleepwise. ?DS went down to sleep for a nap, on his own with just 2 minutes or so of crying, and slept for 2.5 hours. ?Before Ferber, we were lucky to get 30 minutes of napping out of him a day. ?
Look, I wouldn't ordinarily say anything, but you really don't seem like you want to be doing this. My DD does not STTN, so I'm not one of those mom's who gets a full nights sleep and doesn't understand where you are.
Have you tried any non-cio methods? I'm reading the no-cry sleep solution and something in there just disturbed me SO much about CIO. I'll send it to you if you want..but it won't make you feel better about ferber.
If all else has failed, do what you have to..just wanted you to know there are other options. Good luck. Please don't think I'm flaming or judging..just offering my thougths.
Success with Ferber here. We were getting desperate at having to get up every 2 hours at night - it was killing him, us, the dogs (were tired of being stepped on and yelled at) - bad, bad, bad. ?We started about a week ago- and tonight and last night I put him down wide awake. He cried for about 1 minute and then was out. THe best part though? - He is sleeping much longer and better. I was worried about having do the Ferberizing all night long but he is now only waking up once or twice to eat - which I am fine with compared to before. I think we will eventually go to one feeding but it is SO great!! Its hard but keep doing it!!!?
?? THe other thing is, as other posts have said, its really good for them too. Putting themselves back to sleep is a skill they need in life. Its worth it. ?
ps- I altered the times b/c they seemed long to me. I did read the book and I know he suggests them but they seemed really long. I did 3 minutes, then 4, then 5. THe next night we started with 4 minutes, then 5 and so on. Be flexible and go with what feels right to you.?
Success story right here! DS was a terrible sleeper until we Feberized him. We're going on a month of STTN and it's fantastic. Those first few nights are tough for sure (of course so were those 9 months of not getting any sleep) but we have no regrets.
ferber success over here! we went from up every 45 minutes to sleeping 11-12 hours straight every night... even when he's sick, even when he's teething (and no, we didn't DO ferber during those times, it's just that once he started STTN, he hasn't really stopped, with a few exceptions )
I won't lie - it was hard, hard, hard. it took a solid two weeks to get us to where there was NO crying. by about day 7, we were down to minimal crying at two times during the night.
I second-guessed myself a lot, but I knew my son needed sleep. his lack of sleep was affecting him negatively, so it was a hard choice, but the right choice. we had already tried non-CIO methods.
hang in there - good luck!
Mommy to Seth (4) and Catherine Anne (13 mo.)
Excited to welcome a third child in March of 2013!
We didn't do the Ferber method but instead I read "The Sleepeasy Solution". ?I really enjoyed the book and it made me more comfortable those first few nights of sleep training. ?The book explains that essentially whenever a baby learns something new (as with any human at any age) there will be certain frustration which can result in crying, especially in babies. ?Now, having said that, listening to your baby cry isn't easy no matter what and it's not made easier no matter what you read. ?I cried just as much as my daughter did some nights. ?However she's sleeping better now and her temperament is much better so I know the sleep is doing her a lot of good!!
?The authors of "The Sleapeasy Solution" have a website so check it out: ?https://www.sleepyplanet.com/. ?I just thought it was written in a way to help me more than the Ferber method. ?It addressed the emotional side of things more which made me feel better about trying the sleep training. ?Good luck!!?
Don't give up! We started to let dd CIO at 4 months - the first night she cried/screamed for 2 hours straight and it was sooo heartbreaking. The second night it was 45 minutes. For the next week or so she'd softly cry for about 20-30 minutes. After that, she started to whimper for about 10/15 minutes and then went to sleep.
DD has only started sleeping thru the night at 15/16 months now - so up until this point, I'd go in, check her diaper, make sure she was fine and then hold her for a minute or two, and put her back in... it took a few nights of that until she was use to the routine.
Now, we follow our routine every night which end with me rocking her for a few minutes and say good night, put her in bed awake and she goes to sleep herself.
The main thing is you HAVE to be consistant - if you decide halfway through their crying you're going to pick them up, you lose and will have to start the training all over again. That isn't fair to the baby so make sure you're ready. Good Luck.
Success here! It took us only 3 nights to get DS down without crying and 5 days to eliminate nighttime wakings. He now STTN for about 11 hours. Napping was a little harder - it took about two weeks before he'd go down without crying, but it was so worth it. He now takes two 90 minute naps a day.
I PPH Ferber. And I never say PPH.

We're another success story. DS was getting up every 2 hours and didn't STTN until he was 9 months old. I was desperate. He was waking up us and his big brother. Stick to it, and hang in there. I also altered the times and never let him cry for longer than 10 minutes. Never ever. And it still worked like a charm.
Ferber success here, she's EBF, was a horrible sleeper from 3 months on and at around 5 months we started Ferber, it took a few weeks and we had a few set backs due to travel around the holidays but I'd say for the last 3 months she has been sleeping 10-11 hours straight. She wakes up from time to time but if you are CONSISTENT, no picking up, no binky, no nursing to sleep in the middle of the night, then it truly works miracles.
DO NOT CAVE. You will make it SO much harder for yourself next time you try. And harder for your DC. Stay strong. It works. Our first night took an hour, 2nd night took 25, 3trd night 15. Some nights she's out in 4 minutes, some nights it still takes 10. But it is so, so much better.
