Re: Streches for Sciatic??

  • Sorry to hear that.  During my last pregnancy I had the same problem...hopefully someone out there will provide the link to ease us of our pain...

  • The only thing that really helped me with that during pregnancy was my chiropractor!!!

    hope you feel better soon

  • if you have access to a foam roller, that is ideal (most gyms have them) but if not, make your DH roll a tennis ball gently over your nerve.

The best stretch is to sit on the ground with your knees to the chest. Put one ankle on one knee and it will stretch your butt.

I've had issues with my sciatic before so I know how you feel!  Hopefully stretching and some gentle massage helps...

  • How ironic that you post this.  I had trouble a few weeks ago and it went away, but yesterday it came back and stronger then ever.  I can walk a few steps then it catches and I get stuck or basically fall to the ground.  I had to borrow a wheelchair at work today in order to get from the 29th floor, thru the lobby and the parking garage to my car.  There was no way i was going to make it on my own.  I do however feel a little guilty that mine was somewhat caused from still wearing heels to work.  NO MORE OF THAT!  I would love for some advice on relief as well.  Thanks for posting! :)
  • What you want to do is get a foam roller or tennis ball, put it under your cheek and roll over it like so:

This is just one of a variation of stretches.  You can also focus on stretching your hip (which is related) by keeping one leg straight.

    Also, try these:

While focusing specifically on your asss.  Envision that little nerve in there getting squeezed and how good it feels to attack that sucker.

Something like this is the best one but not everyone can do it with a big belly:

You don't necessarily need to turn your head in the complete opposite direction either.  Just pull your knee to your chest enough to stretch out your butt muscle.

PM me if you need more.

  • I've had this pain before too, but fortunately not since becoming pregnant.

You may want to stretch out your piriformis muscle, which can tighten around the sciatic nerve and cause the pain.
