I think it's called Moon Sand--got some for my neighbor and it was a big hit. Not sure if Walmart carries it....it's kinda like Playdoh but is granular and wont dry out but it sticks together and can be molded.
DH's nephew just turned 4 and we got him a Superman costume. He loved it and wants to wear it 24/7. Not sure if your friend's son would be into something like that (or if you could find it @ Walmart), but his nephew is also into all kinds of superheros and anything where he can draw/paint.
I always make up little baskets of coloring goodies, you can put crayons, markers, finger paint, plain paper, a coloring book, and even one of those books w/the markers that they can only color in that book, play-doh, colored pencils, and then put it all in a small clear rubbermaid with the child's name on it like "Child's art Supplies". They seem to be a big hit and it is not something everyone thinks of!

I have a five year old and a seven year old. At that age, they are kinda singular in their interests. If you don't know what that is, a great fall back is anything Color Wonder. It a line of coloring products that only works on the paper that comes with it. So no crayon on walls, no marker on pants, no paint on carpets.
Re: What to get a 5 year old boy for his birthday?
Power Rangers, Transformers or any kind of superhero toy.
ditto.
