BFing - spitting up after every feeding?

DS started nursing less and less yesterday. Finally around 2 pm he started spitting up after every feeding. Not huge amounts, but since he's doing it after every feeding, I'm bothered. I've tried slowing the feedings down (more time between breasts), burping him more often, but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm not denying him time to nurse, and he's still giving me regular hunger cues, but he only seems to want to eat for about 10 minutes - then spit up. He's still filling his diapers like a champ, but now he seems fussy and only wants to sleep when held. I spoke to the ped., and she suggested letting him nurse on one side for as long as he wants and stimulate him before switching sides so he stays awake and gets more food in him. I'm not sure how this is going to help the spitting up, esp. since he's not really interested in eating much. I tried what she suggested and he's still spitting up. It's not full-fledged vomiting, and since his diapers are still full and he's otherwise okay, I'm not freaking out. But I'd be lying if I said it doesn't make me uncomfortable. Has anyone else dealt with this? Did anything help w/the spitting up?

  • Are you burping him? I have to burp after he's done with each side or else he'll spit up. Does he spit up immediately? Try holding him with his body upright after eating.

Spitting up is normal. As long as you are getting the right amount of diapers, I really wouldn't worry.

  • my girl spits up several times after most feedings. She's wetting/dirtying diapers normally and gaining weight. My pedi said as long as she isn't bothered by it, it's normal.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • Is he spitting up right after he feeds or is it several minutes after? Mine spits up occasionally when he has a lot of gas. And sometimes randomly when he's laying down - 30 min or more after a feeding.

  • I agree with other posters....try burping more often - I burp every 5 minutes, and holding upright after each feeding - I hold for 20 minutes.....  My LO only eats 10 min on one breast, and 5-10 min on the second breast, spits up a TON, and is gaining weight normally.  As long as your LO doesn't seem to be uncomfortable or in pain, I wouldn't worry about it.  They call them happy spitters.  Just get some bibs, and plenty of burp cloths.

Both. I know that this is totally normal for babies, and his check-up this week went great (gained several ounces), but this just came out of the blue. I know, it's pretty stupid to say "this isn't like him" when he's only a week old, but I just feel bad for him. He barely seems to notice, though.
