BFers: I can't do it!

I can't drink this Mother's Milk tea.  I just can't.  The smell alone is making me gag.  And then I tried to drink it--it's like black licorice mixed with soapy water mixed with spices.  How much I want to pump up my supply.....I'm not sure I can do it.....is it bad if I have a red wine chaser at noon???  LOL

Is taking the tablet Feverfew worth trying???  I mean, maybe it's just my body saying it's time to wean.....I have no idea.  I've been going SO strong (even had over supply issues for a while)--so this is just something new.  Damn boobs and damn hormones......

Re: BFers: I can't do it!

  • I found it more bearable if I drank it cold and just chugged it.  Sipping it hot made me gag too.

  • sorry i like it, would it be better iced? i haven't tried the feverfew but i have taken the fenugreek tablets and they are big but obviously have no taste. there is another one, milkmaid tea, that my DH found at shoprite but i really think that mother's milk tea works the best of the three. add more sugar :-)
  • Believe it or not, I was told by several different people that beer can increase milk supply.

  • I love mint tea so I make one bag of MM and one bag of peppermint tea in the same cup and it seems to make it a lot easier to stomach. I've also made it with a bag of fruity-flavored tea which helped.

  • Have a beer (I think even the n/a ones count, if I'm not mistaken), EAT OATMEAL EVERY MORNING FOR BREAKFAST, and try More Milk Plus capsules.  They make you burp some, but I think they're better than the tea.  And try to consciously make yourself relax (especially your shoulders; mine hunch up without my even noticing unless I pay attention to them) when BFing or pumping; it really does make a difference.  GL!

  • Just drinking tons more water worked for me- maybe try that first.  My supply was similar to yours- too much for a while- and then all of a sudden it went down and I was told to just drink way more water.  GL!
  • Eating oatmeal every morning helped me.  I had a supply dip around 8 months too.  I did drink the tea, but I think the oatmeal and fenugreek helped the most.  I'm not sure if beer helped or not, but it was a great excuse to have a cold one! Stick out tongue
  • For me, I just eat a TON of food and my supply increases.  Lots of protein too.  Try eating more calories, preferably from protein.

My supply is AWFUL right now since I had a stomach virus and now have a head cold.  I have only eaten soup and toast this week.  I am hoping to eat something real for dinner tonight.  I seriously try to nurse every hour I am with Colin because my supply is so bad now.

I never noticed the beer thing though.  I will have to pay attention to my supply next time I have one!

  • Thanks ladies!   Lots of good ideas.  I agree--beer def helped early on but not as much now.  I wonder if it depends on the kind.  Hmmmm....

I drink water like I'm a swimming pool----pints and pints a day.  Plus stuff like juice, decaf coffee, sometimes a sprite.

I think I might try mixing a fruity tea with this one and see.....otherwise it's to the pills for me.  And the oatmeal---I definitely have to get going on that.

  • Yeah, I even enjoy black licorice and the tea is rough!  I highly recommend the Mother's Milk Plus capsules.  I tried it all (the tea, fenugreek pills, oatmeal, beer, triple feeds/pumping after every feed, etc) but I haven't heard of Feverfew.  Throwing in extra pumpings seemed to help (to increase the demand since my LO doesn't want to hang out on the breast all of the time like when he was little) but it's really time consuming and generally no fun.  The capsules were great for keeping the supply up, although you have to keep using them to keep the supply up.  (Oh and oatmeal helped too.)  Now I'm working on using up my freezer stash and weaning slowly so I don't take them any more.  HTH, good luck!
  • Oatmeal has helped me, as well as beer, like pp have said. Anything dark, like Guiness, really helps. Try lots of oats, like oat bread and granola bars. And drink a LOT of water. That alwayds gets my supply up. Good luck!

  • DH hates the smell too...says I'm not allowed to make it at home any more Devil. I really like it and I drink it everyday. I put some honey in it and I'm set. It has helped me cut back on my coffee consumption too becuase its still a warm drink.

    ::take a sip of MM::

  • The tea makes me a little nauseous. Take the phenugreek tablets instead.. eat oatmeal for breakfast and oatmeal cookies!
