Has anyone bought off Craigslist?

If so, what was your experience like?

I'm looking to buy/sell stuff but I'm a bit overwhelmed by the whole concept of meeting a total stranger and exchanging cash or goods.

Is it worth it? Anyone get good deals? I've heard so many good and bad things. TIA

Re: Has anyone bought off Craigslist?

  • We sold a couch and bought our crib that way. I was skeptical about buying the crib, but it was $100 and in really good shape. I have a tendency to only go for things that have photos. I'm just not that trusting to buy into someone's description.

You have to be prepared for flakes when you're selling something, so have a few people lined up just in case.

    otherwise, it's worked for us.

  • I have both bought and sold. If them coming to your house bugs you, you could meet at a halfway point. Just make sure someone knows where you are going and how long it should take and you will be fine. I say that jsut as a backup plan... Most people on Craigslist are normal people there are only a few weirdos and their emails usually tip you off to who they are if they do respond to you. Don't post anything but general info and use their system to get emails from people.
  • I bought our glider off Craigslist for $75. We had to drive 45 min one way to get it, but it was a great deal and matched the nursery perfectly. Like pp said, I only look at listings with photos.

The lady we bought the glider from said she had a lot of people not show up when they said they would...even when she was meeting them somewhere (she was selling all her baby stuff). We went to her house though.

  • I am a craiglist-aholic! I have sold houses, rented houses, bought and sold furniture, musical instruments, clothing, a crib and changing table, tons of baby stuff, plants, flowers, gardening stuff,.... and so much other stuff I can't even list it all!

I love it! Just be smart! Do not go by yourself to anyone's home. Do not go inside anyone's home. Be honest and tell the person that you are nervous about meeting a stranger off of craigslist. Anyone who is normal and safe to meet with, would completely understand your nerves!

  • I've sold a kayak that way and bought loads of stuff (jogging stroller, glider, baby books).

I tend to only go for items that have clear photos. Of course if you get to the person's place and don't like it as much, you could try to haggle or simply walk away.

I've never had any problems, though the few times I've done it in my city the people always end up living far from me, so it's a hassle to drive out there.

ETA: oh yeah, we've found our last 2 rental homes this way :) yes, I would find a halfway point to meet if the item is not too large and you are the one selling it. otherwise if you are going to someone's house, bring along DH or someone just as a precaution.

  • Thanks everyone!

I've sold off of ebay for many years but you never have to meet people, it's all over email. I'll just make sure to weed out the weirdos on craigslist.

  • We sold two old couches to some college kids and had a good experience.

We got four awesome antique chairs for $60 total...post-college kids wanted them out of their house and it was a great deal.

I only trust cash when buying or selling.

If it's something that isn't too heavy for you to move on your own, you could always meet someone at a central location like a grocery store parking lot or other public/crowded place.

DH has always been home when people have picked stuff up from us.  It was cute though, one of the college kids wrote me a thank-you e-mail telling us how nice it was to have a place to pass out, haha.
