Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When do you think you're going to start potty training?

I know it depends on the child, but I'm just curious. I remember in my Child Development class in college they told us that you shouldn't start potty training before 18 months because it can mess up the kid if they're not ready (don't remember why they said that), but DS is going to be one next month and I'd like to start this summer because I'll be home with him (I'm a teacher). I doubt he'll totally learn how to go by himself, but I'd like to try at least if I see that he's getting ready (giving signs that he can hold his BMs or urine).

  • I haven't really thought about it.  Maybe 20-24 months?  She wears cloth, I understand CD babies potty train earlier.
  • We'll start slowly as soon as he can walk - get him a toilet, introduce him to the concept, etc.

Really?  Why?  I'd never heard this...

  • Whenever they show readiness. My twenty month old...not even close to being ready.

It's because they can feel the wetness against their skin. Disposibles wick the moisture away and the babies feel nothing. That's the arguement against things like pull-ups, they don't teach the kid that they're wet or anything, IMO they just prolong the training process.

Oh, OK.  That makes sense.  I haven't really read up on potty training yet -- one thing at a time!  Thanks:-)

  • I didn't plan on starting until at least 18 months but probably closer to 2 years.  But on a whim I put DS on the toilet the other morning and he pooped.  I read his facial cues and knew he was getting ready to go.  I am going to get him a potty seat so we can start practicing.  I am not going to push it at all, but if I can save a diaper or two then it is worth it in my book.
  • as soon as DS starts walking
  • Most boys aren't ready until at least age 2, so we're just going to let him take the lead and watch his cues.  I think starting too early can set you up for failure or a frustrating few years at the very least.  The average age for boys to be fully trained is age 3.
