Not allowed to call husband at work

My husband is a fire fighter, as in sit around most of the day with nothing to do. According to the new decrees he received at work, none of the guys are allowed to use their cellphones during work hours, and his current station doesn't have a house phone. So if my kid is sick, he could be fired if I call him. 

So all the moms are having their kids' emergency contact number at their schools/daycare changed so they phone the fire chief who would have to drive over to our husbands' location to deliver the message...How long do you think it will take for us to drive him nuts and revoke this ridiculous rule?

 There's a whole list of these new ridiculous rules, including forbidding my husband from using his insulin pump (it's an unapproved electronic device), they cannot take leave to go to a doctor appointment, and only 2 people can be out for any reason (including sick) on any given day. Anyone requesting leave after 2 people are out will be denied so they don't have to pay overtime to anyone.

  • Thats just crazy ... I can't beleive the FF union would allow that. I don't know much about unions, but can't they intervene? And no insulin pump - thats also crazy (I'm also a diabetic, so I get it)? This chief needs to be set straight!

  • I think you are walking a thin line.  Employers can dictate that no cell phones in the work place and no personal calls.  They can also dictate how many people are off for the day as to ensure adequate coverage of responsibilities. 

    As far as an insulin pump - if he has a prescription for it, he should take that in and if he is denied, go to HR/union head.

  • My confidence in the fire service just went down. No offence to your hubby but if idiots of that proportion are in CHARGE of the rules, God help the rest of us.

    I hope they change the rules you mentioned. They are idiotic. Fine approving non-emergency related short notice leave if more people are off, but anything like sick leave should obviously be exempt. I don't want a sick firefighter coming to save my family thanks, I'd like them all to be well and have their insulin pumps and have the peace of mind that their kids are not in a fix at daycare and unable to contact him.

  • My husband is the union VP. The union lawyers are having a field day with it, especially since, most of it is unjustified and is only being implemented as retaliation for a different union griefance they lost and they've admitted as such to the county HR people.

  • You and your daycare provider should be able to call the ECC (emergency command center) instead of calling the chief - the ECC would contact your husband no matter where he is (using the radio) and no one would need to "drive" to relay a message.

  • Glad to hear the union is involved. The insulin pump thing is beyond ridiculous and probably aggainst the ADA, while the union should be able to put a stop to the no-personal-calls rule.

    My DH works for a financial services company and is not allowed to check his Yahoo mail and is not supposed to get personal email messages on his work account. He works at multiple offices and always turns his @!#!@# cell phone OFF when meeting with clients. I cannot tell you what a huge freakin' PITA this is and how much I b!tch to him about it. His email is monitored and his boss once told him he needed to cut down on his personal messages - at that point I was sending him MAYBE 8 a week and they were short and to the point. So I feel your pain. I have told him that as I get closer to my due date and once the baby is here that he damn well better stop silencing his cell phone. If it buzzes while he's talking with a client and I am going into labor, too bad!
